Jose Mourinho believes Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be fit for Manchester United's Boxing Day fixture against Sunderland, after the Armenian injured his ankle late on against Tottenham Hotspur.

Mkhitaryan, 27, struck the only goal of Sunday's game at Old Trafford in the first half, running onto an Ander Herrera pass before shooting high past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

"It looks like the next match is a no, but it looks like it is nothing that is really dangerous or that needs surgery, so hopefully we will probably have Micki on Boxing Day," Mourinho told MUTV, United's in-house television station.

After a slow start to his Old Trafford career, Mkhitaryan struck his first goal for United against Zorya Luhansk in Odessa, Ukraine, last week. The strike against Tottenham was the first ever goal by an Armenian in the Premier League, and helped United climb to within three points of the visiting team.
