A home baker’s first attempt at banana bread left them deflated after discovering that a slice had been thrown away with a single bite taken out.

In a post shared to Reddit, user penna6tx explained that they “literally never bake anything” but decided to try their hand at banana bread after having extra bananas at home.

“I was so excited to get up and try it this morning; didn't expect it to be perfect, but figured if it turned out decent, I could make a better one next time,” the original poster (OP) wrote.

Instead, they were left stunned by what they found.

“Someone had taken a slice already; I wouldn't have a particular issue with it except I went over to the trash can and saw that entire slice sitting there with a bite taken out of it,” the OP wrote.

“Even if it wasn't perfect, I would've still eaten it, so it makes me really sad that someone in my own family would do that.”

They attached a picture of the slice they found in the bin, along with pictures of the loaf and the next slice.

Reddit users weighed in via the comments, with one writing, “It looks like an overcooked endpiece slice. Maybe the interior slices are better, but that wasn't a choice slice by the looks of it.

"Don't get upset, though - we all make things that don't turn out just right, and others don't know the emotional impact that one else gets from any given dish they prepared.

"Good for you for trying something new, and don't be afraid to try again just because someone else didn't like the results this time.”

"Gotta learn to take criticism," another added. "At least you didn't find out by having them immediately spit it out in front of you as soon as they took a bite."

The Appeal of Banana Bread

Banana bread remains one of the most searched and shared home baking recipes.

According to Allrecipes, its “Banana Banana Bread” recipe has earned a 4.7-star rating, describing it as creating “the most delicious, moist loaf with loads of banana flavor.”

The appeal of comfort bakes like banana bread may also rest in how people respond when things do not turn out as planned.

'Take a deep breath'

As Dave wrote in a guide for Creme Filled Churros, “Baking can be a blast, but sometimes things don’t go as planned.”

He adds, “Instead of getting frustrated, take a deep breath and embrace the imperfections. After all, baking is as much about the process as it is about the result.”

In that sense, a discarded slice or an overdone edge piece can feel upsetting, but the broader baking mindset encourages staying calm, learning from mishaps and, when possible, trying again.
