How to Be Cast in Netflix's Real Life 'Squid Game' Challenge

Netflix announced Tuesday that it will soon launch a real-life "Squid Game" reality TV series, and it's looking for English-speaking players to compete for a multi-million dollar prize.

While the streaming platform noted that the show won't end in life or death, Squid Game: The Challenge will consist of 456 players competing in a series of games for the chance to win $4.56 million. Netflix noted that the series will include games inspired by the original show, and players will be put to the test by forming strategies and alliances.

"Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end," Brandon Riegg, Netflix's vice president of unscripted and documentary series, said in a statement.

"The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed," the company added.

Netflix is currently looking for English-speaking people from around the world to sign up for the games. The show will eventually be filmed in the U.K. and aired as a 10-episode competition series.

How to Sign Up

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, own a valid passport, and be available for an "anticipated" four-week filming period in early 2023, according to the company.

To sign up, players must record a one-minute long video about themselves explaining why they want to be on the show, what their "game plan would be," and what they would use the cash prize for if they won.

In addition to that, applicants must submit at least two recent photographs of themselves – no hats or sunglasses allowed – and sign an agreement form by the company. Competitors can officially apply for the games on Netflix's website here.

The Bigger Picture

Squid Game is Netflix's most popular TV series of all time, boasting over 1.65 billion viewing hours in just the first month of its 2021 premier, according to the company.

The Korean drama chronicles the lives of desperately indebted characters who compete in a deadly tournament of children's games in order to win the money they need to survive. Netflix announced Sunday that the series was renewed for a second season, following months of highly-anticipated speculation.

As Newsweek previously reported, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted at the second season earlier this year, telling reporters at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards that "There will be more great games, that's all I can say."
