When Is The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes Released?

The latest Hunger Games installment, set to be directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed the franchise's Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part One and Mockingjay Part Two, is slated to arrive in theaters on November 17, 2023.

The announcement about the next chapter in the billion-dollar franchise arrived during the Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon, along with a brief teaser.

The legend: "You're invited to return to the Games," was reportedly displayed while ice thawed in the background of a winter landscape.

This eventually revealed a bird and a snake displayed on screen, before segueing to the text: "In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake."

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place decades before the exciting exploits of Katniss Everdeen, memorably portrayed by actress Jennifer Lawrence.

This dystopian movie marketed for teens is anticipated to focus on the young Coriolanus Snow, who eventually becomes the dictatorial president of Panem.

The character, who is eventually portrayed by movie legend actor Donald Sutherland in the original films, is portrayed in his late teens in the 2023 iteration of the franchise.

Snow is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, a female tribute from the impoverished District 12, during the 10th Hunger Games.

What Is The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes About?

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will use the book released in 2020 by The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, as its base.

The script is set years before the events of the hit films and follows a young Coriolanus Snow.

In the original movies, Snow was the cruel ruler of Panem, but in the prequel, he will be seen mentoring a young tribute in the 10th Hunger Games. He is assigned District 12 tribute, Lucy Gray Baird, who gains attention by singing during the reaping.

The book finds the games disrupted after mentor Arachne Crane, is killed by her tribute, while Snow is later accused of cheating and stealing food.

The Hunger Games films also starred Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died midway through filming the final two movies, in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.

The first film was released in 2012, and spawned three sequels which climaxed with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2 in 2015.

The Hunger Games quickly became one of the all-time most successful cinematic franchises, grossing approximately $2.9 billion in total, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
