Does 'I Am Groot' Connect to 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3'?

I Am Groot follows its titular character (voiced by Vin Diesel) as he embarks on a variety of solo adventures while not saving the galaxy.

The Disney+ show features five episodes, "Groot's First Steps," "The Little Guy," "Groot's Pursuit," "Groot Takes a Bath" and "Magnum Opus."

But how, fans might ask, does this mini-series connect to the events of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and does it connect to the forthcoming third film and its Holiday Special?

Here is everything you need to know.

Does 'I Am Groot' Connect to 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3' or the 'Holiday Special'?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently set to be released theatrically on May 5, 2023, while the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will come out on Disney+ in December 2022.

I Am Groot is set within the same universe, but the short answer is no, the Disney+ show does not have any meaningful connections to either Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

This does not mean the stories are not important to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, though, because the first episode sees Groot break out of the pot that he was growing in at the end of the first solo film.

The final episode of I Am Groot also follows the character as he wreaks havoc on the Guardians' spaceship in a bid to make a drawing of the moment he sacrificed himself to save his friends in the first film. This suggests when the series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Given how big Groot appears in the show, it can be surmised that the short films are set in the period in between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War.

The reason that this appears to be the case is because Groot is much larger in both Avengers: Infinity War and acts like a teenager would, whereas he is smaller in I Am Groot and appears to still be a baby.

This suggests that the show is set after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, or at the very least during the same period that the film is set in, as that is when Groot was last seen as a baby.

The exact place where I Am Groot fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was confirmed by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' head of streaming.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Winderbaum said that the episodes are untold stories set during Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

He explained: "It's a narrow window, right? It takes place actually between the end of 'Guardians 2' and before the tag scene in 'Guardians 2.' So, it's in this narrow window where Groot in that kind of post-toddler stage of development."
