Joe Rogan Condemned For Falsely Blaming Oregon Fires on 'Left-Wing' Activists

Joe Rogan has come under fire for falsely claiming that Oregan forest fires were deliberately started by what he called "left-wing activists."

"They've arrested people for lighting forest fires up there," Rogan said on the latest episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience while talking about Portland, Oregon. "They've arrested left-wing people for lighting these forest fires, air-quote 'activists.' This is also something that's not being widely reported, you know, that people have actually been arrested for lighting fires up there."

A clip of Rogan making the statement is circulating on Twitter with many social media users condemning the host for spreading false information.

Claims that the fires were started by so-called leftist activists and members of antifa have been debunked by authorities.

"Reports that extremists are setting wildfires in Oregon are untrue. Help us stop the spread of misinformation by only sharing information from trusted, official sources," FBI Portland tweeted.

Oregon Department of Forestry representative Joy Krawczykalso confirmed to the New York Times that her organization is "not seeing any indications of a mass politically influenced arson campaign."

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Roseburg, Oregon said they had been inundated with 911 calls about the rumor. The office took to Facebook to please with residents to stop spreading the false information. "Do your part, STOP. SPREADING. RUMORS!" the office said in a Facebook post.

One person tweeted: "This is Joe Rogan spreading the conspiracy theory that left-wing activists in Oregon are starting forest fires. There is no truth in this, it is entirely a fabrication and has no basis in reality. But what it does do is get people killed."

While another added: "Joe Rogan lies to his millions of listeners that left-wing activists are starting forest fires in Oregon. This dangerous claim has been completely debunked."

Another Twitter user wrote: "Joe Rogan: 'They're arrested left-wing people for lighting these forest fires, airquote 'activists,' and this is something that also is not being widely reported.' This kind of thing gets people killed, and Spotify is paying Rogan $100 million for it."

Newsweek has reached out to Rogan for comment.

Rogan recently signed an exclusive deal with Spotify in May, with the popular podcast due to become exclusively available on the platform later this year.

However, a number of episodes, which are deemed somewhat controversial have not been added to Spotify, with installments featuring Chris D'Elia and Alex Jones not included anymore.
