Jon Cryer And Matt Gaetz Swap Insults In Twitter Feud: 'Charlie Sheen Totally Carried Two And A Half Men'

Jon Cryer and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz exchanged insults on Twitter after the actor announced he had donated to Gaetz's opponent.

Cryer, best known for his role as Alan Harper on sitcom Two and a Half Men, took to social media on Saturday night to announce that he had donated to Phil Ehr, a Democrat who is challenging Gaetz in Florida's 1st congressional district in November.

Ehr had earlier shared a tweet by VoteVets which slammed President Donald Trump after a report in The Atlantic, later confirmed independently by The Associated Press and Fox News, that said the president had mocked fallen and captured U.S. service members.

Trump, who has never served in the military, reportedly called soldiers who died in World War I "losers" and "suckers" during a visit to an American military cemetery in France in 2018.

Rep. @mattgaetz invited a white supremacist to the State of the Union, attempted to intimidate a federal witness, and endorsed a sociopathic bigot who applauded the deaths of migrants for congress.

I just donated to his opponent @PhilEhr https://t.co/wAVK0CR0nt https://t.co/dXfLMSvqXy

Ehr shared the tweet by Vote Vets, which called Trump a "traitor" and said he "has to go."

He added that Gaetz is the "self-proclaimed #1 ally of Trump" and accused him of doing "nothing but continue to blindly follow the lies."

Cryer agreed, writing alongside the tweet: "Rep. @mattgaetz invited a white supremacist to the State of the Union, attempted to intimidate a federal witness, and endorsed a sociopathic bigot who applauded the deaths of migrants for congress."

Cryer shared links backing up those comments—one to a report about Gaetz bringing Charles C Johnson, a Holocaust denier, to the State of the Union in 2018 and another which alleged Gaetz had threatened Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen on Twitter.

Is that why, after he left, it lasted for 4 more years and I won an Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy? https://t.co/VTE6g2yjZp

What’s an Emmy?

An award Hollywood gives itself?

I win elections. https://t.co/7ZUyIw2UUL

He also referenced Gaetz's endorsement of Laura Loomer, a controversial far-right commentator who will be running against Democratic incumbent, Rep. Lois Frankel, in Florida's 21st congressional district. Cryer shared a picture of Gaetz with Loomer as well as a screenshot of a tweet she wrote in 2017 praising the deaths of thousands of migrants.

But Gaetz fired back by insulting Cryer's acting skills, saying his former Two and a Half Men costar Charlie Sheen had "totally carried" the show.

Cryer then responded saying: "Is that why, after he left, it lasted for 4 more years and I won an Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy?"

Gaetz retorted: "What's an Emmy? An award Hollywood gives itself? I win elections."

The Twitter spat led to Charlie Sheen trending on Twitter, with many calling out Gaetz for defending the actor instead of speaking up about service members.

Others shared clips of Sheen's 2016 appearance on The Graham Norton Show in which he said he was not a fan of Trump—and told the story of how Trump had once gifted him a pair of cufflinks that he claimed were diamonds, but were later revealed to be fake.

I don't know why @mattgaetz invoked Charlie Sheen, to mock @MrJonCryer

Matt Gaetz is a douche. But Two and a Half Men was unwatchable after Charlie Sheen left, no matter how many times Jon Cryer was "winning" Emmys.

"I don't know why @mattgaetz invoked Charlie Sheen, to mock @MrJonCryer," one person commented. "Charlie HATES Trump/MAGA, as evidenced by a much told story where Sheen outed Trump for once gifting him with FAKE "diamond" Cufflinks."

Another added: "In yet another example of how stupid Florida's Matt Gaetz is, he praised Charlie Sheen on Twitter, the same Charlie Sheen who has nothing but disdain for Gaetz's idol."

But others joked that Two and a Half Men was "unwatchable" after Sheen was replaced by Ashton Kutcher.

"Matt Gaetz is a douche. But Two and a Half Men was unwatchable after Charlie Sheen left, no matter how many times Jon Cryer was "winning" Emmys," comedian Matt Walker tweeted.

Sheen was fired from the comedy series in 2011 because of his "dangerously self-destructive conduct," executives said at the time.
