Kasie Hunt's Analysis Slammed by Critics: 'Biggest Loser' in California Recall

CNN chief national affairs analyst Kasie Hunt is facing social media backlash for her analysis of the circumstances surrounding Governor Gavin Newsom's defeat of a recall effort.

Hunt offered her views on what the unsuccessful attempt to remove the Democratic governor meant and focused her analysis on criticism of Democrats and a discussion of what the party needed to do going forward.

This view was not well-received among Twitter users, including other journalists, who publicly criticized Hunt's take and suggested she didn't actually understand the situation in California.

Hunt's Twitter thread began: "CA GOV BIG PICTURE: One of the top Democrats in the country got caught living like an elite while everyone else suffered. Elites vs. the rest is the driving force in our politics right now and Democrats have a tough needle to thread both in California & nationwide."

"Democrats need to prove they can govern for EVERYBODY, and if you look at California -- it's not necessarily the best test case for national Democrats (see: concern about homelessness, crime, etc)," she wrote.

Hunt went on to say that the fact Newsom had to face a recall election at all and had to fight hard to win "does say a lot about the potential challenges Democrats face across the map" and linked the election to President Joe Biden and Democrats' electoral chances more broadly.

Many social media users were left unimpressed with Hunt's analysis and some very highly critical.

Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox, tweeted that "we can all agree that Kasie Hunt is the biggest loser in the California recall."

Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, made a similar comment about Hunt.

"Larry Elder: I lost on California recall election night. Kasie Hunt: Hold my beer," Mystal tweeted.

Singer John Legend responded to Hunt's thread directly, writing: "He faced a recall because it's ridiculously easy to start a recall in California. He won in a landslide that probably won't reflect much erosion from his last election, if any. This analysis seems to be ignoring these very salient points."

Miranda Yaver, a political science professor at Oberlin College, retweeted Hunt and pointed to California's recall election process, which has become the focus of renewed attention and criticism.

"CA GOV BIG PICTURE for Kasie Hunt: CA has a backwards recall process allowing a large but vocal minority to waste a colossal amount of time and money opposing common sense public health measures while mimicking the bigoted prez who lost the state by a commanding margin last fall," Yaver said.

TV writer Steve Marmel, who worked on shows including The Fairly OddParents and I Am Weasel, tweeted: "Tonight's lesson for Democrats: Don't negotiate with traitors and regressives... push back hard. Despite what Kasie Hunt has to say."
