Designer Kate Spade was found dead of an apparent suicide in her home on Park Avenue, in New York, WCBS-TV reported Tuesday. She was 55 years old.
Spade started out her career working for Mademoiselle, a popular women's magazine in the 1980s. She met her husband, Andy Spade—brother of actor David Spade—when they worked at the same clothing store while she was at college. They married in 1994.
Spade and her husband launched their signature handbag line in 1993. Their brand grew to include jewelry and a clothing line as well.
