Editor's Note

Our readers have strong feelings about the way Newsweek and other media outlets covered the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. We too have concerns, and we've had some tough, candid conversations inside the newsroom in the past week.

As this Associated Press story reports, newsrooms everywhere are thinking about how to handle this issue going forward.

In the next week, our editorial staff will be meeting with an expert from a suicide prevention organization. I'm asking him to review our existing guidelines and recommend ways we could do better; we'll also look at the kinds of pitfalls that other publications fell into.

I expect this will be a continuing conversation. Like Newsweek's readers, we hold our journalism to high standards.
