'The Last of Us' HBO Series Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot

The Last of Us and its sequel are two of the most successful and acclaimed video games ever made, so it is no surprise that the show is being made into an HBO series. The series, which will be helmed by Chernobyl's Craig Mazin, will follow the plot of the first game, which sees Joel and his 14-year-old ward Ellie trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic society. The first two pieces of casting have also been announced, with two former Game of Thrones actors in the two leads.

When is The Last of Us coming to HBO?

So far, there is no release date for the series. However, the project was first announced in March 2020, and the pilot is set to be directed by Russian director Kantemir Balagov at some point in 2021, with the show ordered straight to series. This suggests that the series could come in 2022 or even late 2021.

As gamers will know, The Last of Us has at its core the tough survivor Joel, who is tasked with smuggling the teenager Ellie out of a quarantine zone. In February, the actors who will play these roles were revealed, and both have previous with HBO.

Playing Joel will be Pedro Pascal, who formerly played Oberyn Martell on Game Of Thrones and has also starred in Wonder Woman 1984, Narcos and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Of course, he is also currently the lead of The Mandalorian. The Deadline article that announced his casting noted that he will continue on that show—the fact that he is masked for most of the Disney+ show makes it easier to do both.

In the Ellie role, meanwhile, is Game of Thrones' Lyanna Mormont, 17-year-old Bella Ramsey. She has also starred in His Dark Materials.

Numerous fan websites had also reported that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali was to star in The Last of Us. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Moonlight actor did consider a role but ultimately did not join the HBO series.
