Have 'Law & Order: SVU' and 'Organized Crime' Been Renewed for New Seasons?

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Organized Crime are both set to air their season finales on June 3 on NBC. The return of Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) to the Law & Order-verse has not only led to Organized Crime being a ratings hit, but it has also reenergized SVU in the ratings during its record 22nd season.

But has this been enough to get both shows renewed for more seasons? Here's what we know.

Has Law & Order: SVU been renewed?

The future of Special Victims Unit was already certain before this current season aired. In February 2020, the show was renewed for three seasons all at once, meaning that the show is set to air until Season 24.

With this renewal, the show expands its lead as the longest-running live action series of all time. By the end of Season 24 in spring 2023, it will have been on air for 24 years—four more years than previous record holder Gunsmoke.

It also makes Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series, beating the two leads of Gunsmoke and Kelsey Grammer's Frasier Crane (across Cheers and Frasier).

Had the show not been renewed in 2020, it likely still would have got a renewal after this season. While the general trend is that shows lose audience over time, SVU Season 22 has actually gained viewers since its last season. The show was watched by an average of 4.3 million people per episode this season (per TV Series Finale). This is an increase of nearly 20 percent from Season 21.

In the fall 2021 season, Law & Order: SVU will keep its Thursday night slot at 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT on NBC. It will be preceded by spinoff Law & Order: For the Defense, which take fans of the franchise to the other side of the law by focusing on a criminal defense firm.

Has Law & Order: Organized Crime been renewed?

Joining those two shows on Thursday nights will be Organized Crime, which has been renewed for a second season. That season will air at 10 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. CT

The show was also a ratings hit for NBC this season. With an average audience of 4.9 million viewers, it inched out SVU to be the fifth most watched scripted show on the network this season, behind the three Chicago shows and This Is Us.

The release date for the new seasons of SVU and Organized Crime has not been revealed yet, but both are expected to air in late September. Based on when previous seasons have started, the most likely release date is Thursday, September 23.

Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: SVU are streaming now on Hulu and Peacock.
