Liam Payne Says One Direction Would Have Killed Him If It Carried On

Liam Payne has revealed how continuing as part of One Direction could have killed him. The British boyband, who were formed on the U.K. talent show X Factor, made stars out of members Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik. Malik left the band in 2015.

The group debuted in 2010 and went on to amass fame and hysteria similar to that of English rock legends The Beatles. One Direction previously earned a Guinness World Record as the first group to debut at number one with their first four albums in the U.S.

In 2016, the group went on an indefinite hiatus, allowing the members to find success as solo artists. In an interview with Steven Bartlett, for his The Diary of A CEO podcast, the "Strip That Down" hitmaker got candid on the cost of fame.

"The day the band ended I was like, 'thank Lord for that' and I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that but I needed to stop or it would kill me," Payne is heard saying in a clip from the interview.

The 27-year-old popstar opened up on the struggle of experiencing stardom in his teenage years, admitting it was "toxic and difficult" at certain points. Payne explained that there is a significant sacrifice to be made when it comes to fame.

There are very few people who have experienced what he has in the last decade.

He told of how the success of the band often meant they were locked in hotel rooms which prompted him to use the mini-bar as a "party for one." The singer added that this went on to become an issue for years to come.

The "Familiar" singer also said he struggled with the lack of freedom he had when it came making choices as a teenager.

"We were always locked in a room at night and then it would be car, hotel room, stage, sing, locked," he said. "So it was like they pulled the dust cloth off, let us out for a minute, 'woohoo' and then it's like 'back under here.'"

Opening up on his relationship with the group now, Payne said he is in a good place with most members. The singer-songwriter said he recently spoke to Styles when he called to check in on him, adding that he "loves him to pieces."

Styles, who has seen colossal success in his solo ventures, recently made headlines after a beauty brand appeared to be registered in his name.

The phrase "STYLES, Harry Edward" popped up on a government file in the U.K, listing Emma Spring as his co-director.

The singer is yet to comment on the reports.
