New 'Loki' Trailer: The TVA and Time Keepers, Explained

A new trailer for the upcoming Marvel/Disney+ series Loki has premiered, and it introduces an element that could change the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever.

The just-released preview, which dropped Monday, gives fans the most information yet on the TV series' plot. We also get a glimpse at some of the new characters who will be appearing opposite Tom Hiddleston's Loki. More than anything else, though, we're betting it's the introduction of the TVA that will get Marvel die-hards talking.

Before we dive in further, watch the new Loki trailer below.

First things first: The TVA, or Time Variance Authority, is a bureaucratic group of timeline monitors in the Marvel Universe run by Mr. Alternity, an individual who has never been seen in the comics or elsewhere.

The TVA's first appearance in the comic books came in the pages of Thor #372, back in 1986. Created by the team of Walt Simonsen and Sal Buscema, the TVA's aim is to bring order to anything that alters the timeline in any way.

However, while they have authority and influence over the timeline, they don't have absolute power to stop time-altering events or villains in the comics—and that seems to also be the case in the MCU, considering the events of Avengers: Endgame.

You no doubt remember that, in Endgame, the Avengers traveled through time to retrieve the Infinity Stones and reverse Thanos' "Blip." Unfortunately for Earth's Mightiest Heroes, their plan hit a snag when the Loki of 2012 swiped the Tesseract and escaped the Avengers' clutches—which brings us to the Loki series on Disney+.

In the new trailer, it's explained to the Trickster God that his actions have fractured reality and now the TVA want Loki to help them fix it. And that's where the Time Keepers come in.

In the comics, the Time Keepers were three individuals who were created by the last director of the TVA at the end of time itself. In the trailer for Loki, we see three stone figures meant to represent the Time Keepers in the middle of the TVA base. Just as their name suggests, they're supposed to be the custodians of time. (They're also the masters of Immortus, a character whose future self becomes the famed Avengers villain Kang the Conqueror.)

We also see the MCU debut of Mobius M. Mobius, arguably the most recognizable TVA agent, who's played in the new show by Owen Wilson. This character has had run-ins with the Fantastic Four in the comics.

The TVA, in fact, have had multiple run-ins with Marvel heroes, including Thor, the Fantastic Four and She-Hulk. However the Loki series shapes up, the MCU will be getting much bigger with the introduction of the TVA.

Loki is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 11.
