Louis Van Gaal has used almost every trick in the book in attempting to turn around Manchester United's season, but his latest effort at motivation was certainly out of left field.

In a press conference prior to United's UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie against FC Midtjylland of Denmark on Thursday at Old Trafford, Van Gaal claimed his players would have to be "hungry and horny" to overturn the 2-1 defeat they suffered in Herning last week.

Asked what qualities he wanted from his charges, Van Gaal said: "Desire, hunger, and a lot of times I use the word horny."

The remainder of the press conference was more prosaic, as the Dutchman explained how his team would go about beating Midtjylland, the defending Danish league champion.

"I think that Midtjylland has a very good organization, very detailed, and the players want to perform that organization. They play with diagonal pressing, I do it also with my team, and not many teams are doing that," Van Gaal explained.

"When I see the data of Midtjylland they have always won against English opponents. Everyone thinks it's nothing but you have to analyze every opponent on their own qualities and I think they have a lot of qualities."

Horny or not, United needs to progress against Midtjylland in order to keep alive its hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, as it trails Manchester City in the English Premier League by six points.
