Madison Cawthorn Calls for 'Demon Doctor' Anthony Fauci to Face Formal Investigation

Representative Madison Cawthorn has called for an investigation of "demon doctor" Anthony Fauci, the federal infectious diseases expert who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

"Dr. Fauci has forsaken his Hippocratic oath and exchanged it for the mantle of unchecked power," the North Carolina Republican said in a Tuesday speech on the House floor.

"His policies shuttered the U.S. economy, drove our country into financial upheaval and violated the rights of millions of Americans," Cawthorn added.

Cawthorn then called for the creation of a formal commission to investigate Fauci's alleged role, he said, in creating the COVID-19 virus. The congressman also accused Fauci of allegedly making false statements to Congress regarding the NIAID's funding of gain-of-function (GAF) research within China's Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

In May, the Senate unanimously passed a bill declassifying federal information on the origins of COVID-19 as President Joe Biden ordered a deep investigation into the cause of the global pandemic. Some suspect that the pandemic originated from the WIV.

"Americans deserve the truth, and this demon doctor must never be allowed to escape justice," Cawthorn added.

Conservatives have long targeted Fauci because of his continued advocacy for restrictive measures for slowing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, Cawthorn pledged that if Republicans retake full control of Congress after the 2022 midterm elections, he would personally ensure that Fauci is legally charged for allegedly lying to Congress.

Conservatives have accused Fauci of "obfuscating the truth" about the COVID-19's origins and changing his mind about whether the virus originated from a lab.

They have also claimed that the NIAID funded gain-of-function (GOF) research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology that helped COVID-19 leap from animals to humans, causing the pandemic.

While Fauci said that the NIAID has never funded GOF research, he admitted under Senate questioning that he can't know for certain how the WIV lab used the NIAID's funding. Recent documents have suggested that Fauci may have been "untruthful" about the funding's use, though his agency has continued to deny that it ever funded GOF research.

In his Tuesday speech, Cawthorn also said he wanted the commission to investigate "why the hell Americans are funding the torture of puppies in Africa."

The line referred to a recent revelation that the NIAID issued a $1.68 million taxpayer-funded grant to a Tunisian laboratory to conduct drug and "de-barking" experiments on beagle puppies.

Animal experimentation is a common occurrence in the United States, both by government agencies and private industries.

The laboratories of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for example, reported having approximately 43,000 dogs in their facilities in 2020. The vast majority were used in experiments, according to The Humane Society of the United States, an organization that opposes cruelty against animals.
