Man Dies in Freak Accident as Four Jet Skis Collide in California: Police

One man is dead following a collision of four jet skis in California on Saturday.

The incident occurred a little before 12:30 p.m. under the Coronado Bridge in the San Diego Bay. According to Sergeant T.D. De La Pena with the San Diego Harbor Police Department, emergency responders found that the man was not breathing following the collision. He is believed to have been between 20 and 30 years old.

Responders attempted to perform CPR on the man, whose name has not been disclosed to the public at this time, after pulling him from the water and onto a nearby dock. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, according to De Le Pena.

The other individuals involved in the four-way crash were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for a range of non-life-threatening injuries. The incident remains under investigation.

De La Pena said in a statement to Newsweek that, as of Monday, no updates were available in the case, which is still being investigated.

Another man was fatally injured while riding a jet ski last summer, but under entirely different circumstances. Eugene Arao, 47, of Reno, Nevada, died after he was struck by lightning while riding a jet ski in Stampede Reservoir, northeast of Sacramento. His body was later found by emergency responders about 20 yards from the reservoir shoreline.

Arao's son was near his father when the lightning hit. He was knocked unconscious and later found to be heavily burned. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and eventually made a recovery.

Others near the impact area were also affected. "We had some minor damage to our boat....our sonar was fried from the strike and it knocked the wind out of our nine-year-old," Shelly Bryant, a witness to the event who was about 30 feet from Arao, said in a Facebook post. "She has some minor chest pain today but is doing well."

More recently, two people were injured in a jet ski crash on New York's Oneida Lake in July. According to the New York State Police, two people riding on a jet ski were injured after crashing into a fishing boat.

"A 2003 Seadoo Jet Ski operated by Michael Easterly, age 54, from Liverpool, along with a passenger, Samantha Precourt, age 31 from Syracuse, were traveling on Oneida Lake when they failed to observe a boat and struck the bow of the bass fishing boat," police said in a statement. "Neither occupant of the boat sustained any injury."
