Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney was the recipient of a "stratospherically gigantic" offer to move to China, according to media personality Piers Morgan.

Writing for the Mail on Sunday, Morgan claimed a telephone conversation on February 20 with Rooney during which the striker, currently out injured with damaged knee ligaments, told him he had received an exorbitant offer to play in China alongside Sven Goran-Eriksson, his former England manager.

"My phone rang at 11pm tonight [February 20]. It was England football captain Wayne Rooney," Morgan wrote.

"He wanted to discuss his forthcoming Manchester United testimonial plans this summer.

"But we also talked about reports in the papers this week that he's been offered ridiculous sums of money to go and play in China for Shanghai, a team managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"He then revealed a figure, based on a three-year deal, so stupendously, stratospherically gigantic that it did indeed make me feel instantly nauseous. (Without giving too much away, let's just say it included eight noughts...) I literally gasped in horror, prompting him to add a final killer blow: "After tax!"'

Rooney is believed to have turned down an offer in December from Shanghai SIPG, the Chinese Super League side managed by Eriksson.

His would have been the most remarkable of an exodus of top players in European leagues to China in the January transfer window.

Ramires, the former Chelsea midfielder, moved to Jiangsu Suning, while Liverpool transfer target Alex Teixeira chose the same club ahead of a move to the English Premier League.

Jackson Martinez, the Atletico Madrid striker, went to Guangzhou Evergrande, while Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin transferred to Shanghai Shenhua F.C.

Rooney was told on Tuesday by England manager Roy Hodgson, in an interview with radio station TalkSport, that he would be part of the England squad for UEFA Euro 2016, provided he recovers from the injury suffered in February.
