Man's 'First Time' Meeting Cat at Shelter Delights the Internet

A Reddit post has gone viral showing a man named Peter meeting his cat, Batman, for the first time at a shelter called Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London. The content is delighting viewers who love the pair's connection.

The video was shared to the subreddit "Aww" by u/Waistcoatio on January 28. It's captioned, "The first time my dad met our cat at the shelter. Love at first sight." The 54-second video began with a black and white cat sitting in the lap of Peter with his paws on the man's body.

When Peter looked up to say something, the cat put a paw on the man's chest, just staring at him. The man pet Batman and spoke to him as the cat just sat calmly the whole time. The woman behind the camera, who is the Redditor's mother, said they don't have a cage for the cat, who got closer to the man's face, looking up at him and pawing at his chest. Appearing to sniff the man's nose, the Redditor's mother, said, "Oh how sweet." The cat even got a nail ever so slightly stuck in the man's sweater, but he didn't seem to mind.

Peter cradled Batman in both arms as the cat got more comfortable, leaning his paws on the man's chest. The woman mentioned the cat was "different" from their other two cats, and the cat looked around over in the direction of the camera.

"Oh he's loving the attention," the woman added. The petting continued before the video cut off.

In a comment, someone asked the OP if the pair lived together after the video, to which they replied, "They still do. This video was taken about six years ago."

According to the ASPCA, around 6.3 million animals come to shelters in the United States every year. A little over 3 million of those animals are cats, while 3.1 million are dogs.

Over 23,000 people have liked the video, which is delighting the Internet. Some commented on the bond Batman and Peter share. "The cat has definitely chosen their person," someone said. "Love it."

Based on the cat's name, some wished Peter's name was different. "Oh I wish your dad's name was Alfred," a Redditor wrote.

Some appreciated the cat's name, which was revealed in a comment by the OP. "Love it, lil Batty," someone joked.

Another called the pairing between Peter and Batman a "good match," adding, "You do not choose the cat. The cat chooses you. They both look very happy."

People really seem to appreciate the viral video. "Congrats on your excellent human selection kitty," a Redditor wrote.

Another comment suggested the two souls knew each other. "I don't think it was first sight...that soul knows that man," the viewer said, to which the OP replied, "That's a really lovely sentiment. Thank you."

"Now this is a true awwww," another pointed out.

One called the content "so soothing to watch." They also said, "Your dad seems like a sweetie (so does the kitty)."

Another Redditor admitted their reaction to the content. "This had me awing out loud in public three times before I noticed I was making noise," they said.

Other people had comments like, "Aww love at first sight, this union was meant to be," and "I love this."

Newsweek reached out u/Waistcoatio for comment, who said: "I can only say it's a video that always comforts me when I'm feeling down, and I'm so thrilled to see it make so many people happy!"
