Why was The Amazing Race Season 33 delayed?

Filming on The Amazing Race began in February 2020, after it was confirmed a month earlier that the show would return for its 33rd season.

The show began with three legs of the journey complete in England and Scotland before production was shut down and the teams were sent home because of an increase in COVID cases.

In an interview with Variety in July 2020, host Phil Keoghan said of suspending filming: "It didn't take long for us to realize that we hadn't overreacted, that we had done the right thing. Our goal is obviously to get back out and to finish Season 33. But I am a little disheartened by what I'm seeing with the number of cases."

In September 2021 filming resumed on the season, with production working with four COVID testing teams and chartering their own 757 jet to ensure everyone remained safe.

Variety reported in December 2021 that the show would take the teams to Zurich, Lugano, Corsica, Thessaloniki, Lisbon and finally Los Angeles, as these were considered low-risk countries to visit amid the pandemic.

The Amazing Race Season 33 begins airing on Wednesday, January 5 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
