A California man was handed a grocery list from his 89-year-old mother, but he wasn’t prepared for the final item written down.

Gus Tejeda Jr. shared the handwritten list in a post on Threads (@gus.tejeda77) alongside a printed image of actor Taylor Kinney who plays firefighter Kelly Severide on Chicago Fire.

The grocery list from his mom, Olympia, reads like any other: beef, milk, eggs, pizza, beans, sponges, lunch bags, chicken thighs. The surprise request came at the end: a “boyfriend 60–70,” with the actor pictured as the example.

“My mom is very humorous, always telling jokes or pranks,” Tejeda told Newsweek. “[This is] very typical of her. I have some good ones that she has pulled.”

The 68-year-old said he couldn’t stop laughing when she handed him the list—and he wasn’t surprised in the slightest. Growing up, he explained, his mother was known for doing “crazy stuff,” and her sense of humor hasn’t dulled with age.

Tejeda shared that his father passed away last year after 68 years of marriage, a loss that made the playful moment resonate even more deeply with friends and strangers alike.

“Every time Chicago Fire comes on, she says to me, ‘Open the door, I’m having hot flashes looking at my boyfriend,’” Tejeda said.

His post has gone viral on Threads, clocking up over 9,000 likes and shares. In the comments, users shared their own stories of bold, funny and unapologetically candid older relatives.

“This is hysterical,” one person wrote. “At my grandmother’s 100th birthday party, in front of a room full of people, she announced ‘it was time for her to take a man again!'”

Another joked, “You’re gonna find her a boyfriend at the grocery store??? I want to know where you shop!”

Others reflected on the realities of dating later in life. “Well if she’s anything like my mom, she doesn’t want to have to nurse an old man,” one commenter shared. “I told mine, but you could do things together like go to doctor appointments and colonoscopies. That didn’t go over well.”

One user even recalled their grandfather’s celebrity crush: “My grandfather wanted to marry the lady that used to be on the Duncan Hines cake mix box. He gave me $5 to put an ad in the newspaper so she might see it.”

“People had a good laugh,” Tejeda said. “[We] had friends call and say your mom is so cute.”
