New York City is once again expecting extreme cold this weekend, with the frigid weather pattern becoming the longest duration of extreme cold the Big Apple has seen in at least eight to 10 years.
"It's been eight to 10 years since we've seen such a prolonged period of cold temperatures like this," NWS New York meteorologist David Stark told Newsweek, adding that this weekend will be the coldest weather that New York City has endured all winter.
New York City has been locked in a prolonged stretch of cold weather, with temperatures repeatedly falling well below seasonal norms in recent days. Forecasters say the persistent chill has been driven by repeated intrusions of arctic air, keeping much of the region below freezing for extended periods.

The cold pattern is showing little sign of easing. Meteorologists say another reinforcing surge of arctic air is expected to arrive late Friday into the weekend, bringing even colder conditions to the city and surrounding areas. High temperatures this weekend are forecast to remain in the teens and lower 20s, with overnight lows dropping into single digits in some locations. Gusty winds behind the cold front could push wind-chill values well below zero at times, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
The NWS has warned that the incoming cold blast could mark the coldest periods of the season for the New York City metro area, especially when factoring in wind chills.
"This will be one of the colder weekends the city has seen in the last several years," Stark said.
Although it's unlikely that the climate site at Central Park will document a record cold temperature this weekend, Stark stressed that the city hasn't "seen this type of cold in quite some time."
In Central Park, the temperature could dip as low as 5 degrees without factoring in wind chill. When wind chill is considered, the temperature could feel below zero.
"An arctic cold front brings light snow Fri night into Sat morning," NWS New York posted on X. "Frigid air, strong winds, and hazardous/dangerous wind chills are expected Sat into Sun. The lowest wind chills will occur Sat night into Sun morning, potentially -20 to -25 inland and -10 to -20 elsewhere."
Cold-weather-related NWS alerts have been issued from Ohio through Maine. Officials are urging residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the extreme cold settles in. While some light snow is possible, forecasters say the most significant impact will be the dangerously low temperatures that are expected to persist through much of the weekend.
"The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes," NWS New York said in an extreme cold watch. "Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures."
