NFL Preseason: How to Watch New England Patriots vs Washington Football Team on TV, Stream

Mac Jones could make his New England Patriots debut on Thursday night, when the six-time Super Bowl champions host the Washington Football Team in Week 1 of the NFL preseason.

The former Alabama quarterback's stock enjoyed a meteoric rise in the lead up to the NFL Draft back in April, when Jones was widely regarded as a shoo-in to be selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall pick.

The 49ers picked North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance instead, with Jones falling all the way down to No. 15, where he was picked up by the Patriots.

Jones is the first quarterback the franchise has selected in the first-round of the draft since Bill Belichick first took charge of the Patriots two decades ago.

Despite being less athletic than the four quarterbacks selected ahead of him in the first round, Jones has all the traits of a quarterback who could thrive in Belichick's offense. A pocket passer who reads the game well, he passed for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and four picks last year, completing 77.4 percent of his passes.

Cam Newton remains the starter in New England but the former NFL MVP may soon have to look over his shoulder, following a somewhat underwhelming first season in New England.

The first overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft signed with the Patriots as a free agent to replace Tom Brady, but posted career-lows in passing yards and passing touchdowns—excluding the 2019 season, when he played just two games.

Whichever quarterback the Patriots select for their first preseason game will come up against a unit that ranked as the second-best defense in the NFL last season and has been upgraded by the arrival of cornerback William Jackson III.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera made it clear the starters will play against the Patriots on Thursday, which means reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young should see plenty of action.

Here's all you need to know ahead of Thursday.
