'One Piece' Chapter 1,000 Recap: Luffy vs Kaido Finally Begins

One Piece, the long-running manga, has reached 1,000 chapters, a milestone that is not easy to accomplish.

The latest chapter of Eiichiro Oda's epic story was released on Sunday, and it gives One Piece fans a taste of the long-awaited battle between Luffy and Kaido. The Wano arc has gone on for almost 100 chapters, and in that time we have seen the growth of power in Luffy and his crew.

This story arc also offers One Piece fans some much-needed backstory on Ace and Gol D. Roger, before giving away to chapter 1,000 and what looks to be the beginning of the end of the Wano arc.

Followers of One Piece can read chapter 1,000 and previous chapters on the official Viz Media/Shonen Jump page. Also, Chapter 1,001 is set to drop on January 17.

Chapter 1,000 begins with Luffy finally making his way to the roof of Kaido's castle as Yamato talks with Momonosuke about his father, Oden. She begins to tell him about her encounter with Ace. One story Ace tells Yamato is about his little brother Luffy who wanted to be King of the Pirates since he was a kid.

Yamato also gives Oden's journal to Momonosuke; it contains all that he's learned about his life outside of the country of Wano. Yamato explains that she gave Ace her Vivre Card, but when he died, it disappeared and she learned that Ace was the son of Roger.

She goes on to explain to Momonosuke that Oden wrote if he would perish, the next generation of pirates would take down Kaido and save Wano.

On the roof of the castle, Luffy, Law, Zoro, Kid and Killer stare down Kaido and Big Mom. Kin'emon and the rest of the samurai who went up against Kaido in previous chapters are shown to have fallen in battle. Luffy promises Kin'emon that he will put Wano "on his back" before Law transports them away to clear the field for the battle ahead.

Kaido and Big Mom scoff at the pirates in front of them, especially Luffy, mocking his desire to become King of the Pirates. Luffy charges an attack and readies to hit Kaido, who just stands there ready to take it like he did in their first encounter almost 100 chapters earlier. However, this time is different.

Luffy reveals a brand new attack called Gear Three: Gum Gum Red Roc, a fiery punch that visibly hurts Kaido. Luffy's training with Haki on Wano has increased his power and durability, allowing him to penetrate Kaido's tough scales and deal damage.

The attack shocks Kaido and Big Mom, as the chapter ends with Luffy declaring he will surpass both of them to "be king of the pirates."
