Peter Navarro Says 'Sociopath' Anthony Fauci Will Be 'Gone Within 90 Days'

Peter Navarro, former President Donald Trump's one-time trade adviser, has claimed Dr. Anthony Fauci will be "gone" in the next 90 days and accused him of being a "sociopath."

Navarro spoke to Steve Bannon's War Room Pandemic program on Tuesday and claimed that COVID-19 originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. This has not been proven, but Fauci has said he's in favor of a thorough investigation.

Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), previously called Navarro's claim that he was the "father" of COVID "bizarre," but Navarro reiterated that attack in his interview with Bannon.

He also claimed that Fauci had funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Fauci has said no such research was funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH).

"Tony Fauci is the father of the virus," Navarro said. "It came from that lab."

Navarro said Fauci had funded the lab through third parties.

"And Tony Fauci greased the skids for gain-of-function experimentation, which weaponizes viruses. We know all that," Navarro said.

"But here's the thing. I want to put this on the record. Fauci's gonna gone within 90 days."

Navarro told Bannon that "you and I" had known about the possibility of a pandemic in January 2020 and cited the "evilness" of the Chinese Communist Party.

He went on to repeat the unproven claims that the virus came from a Wuhan lab and that Fauci funded gain-of-function research there. The NIH did provide some funding for the Wuhan Institute of Virology but Fauci has said there was no funding for gain-of-function experiments.

"My point Steve is that this man is a sociopath," Navarro said as Bannon brought the interview to a close.

Speaking during a Senate hearing on May 11, Fauci told Senator Rand Paul the NIH had not provided money for gain-of-function research in Wuhan.

"The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology," Fauci said.

At a "United Facts of America: A Festival of Fact-Checking" event on May 11, Fauci was asked if he was "still confident" that COVID developed naturally.

"No, actually ... I am not convinced about that, I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened," he said.

"Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out. So, you know, that's the reason why I said I'm perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus."

On May 24, Fauci told CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang that he believed it was "highly likely" that COVID occurred naturally, but favors a thorough investigation into the matter.

Newsweek has asked the NIH and NIAID for comment.
