'Pokémon Go' Lunar New Year Event: Start Time, Research Tasks and More

In the Chinese Lunar New Year, 2021 is the year of the Ox, a fact that has not slipped by Pokémon Go. The game is preparing to celebrate this with an event of their own, featuring bovine and red-colored Pokémon.

The Pokémon Go Lunar New Year event begins this week and will give trainers a chance at some rare Pokémon, a new Mega and the return of Legendary Pokémon in Raids. Here's everything you need to know about the Pokémon Go Lunar New Year event.

The Lunar New Year event in Pokémon Go begins Tuesday, February 9, at 10 a.m. local time and ends Sunday, February 14 at 1 p.m. local time.


The official Pokémon Go blog confirms that there will be two sets of research tasks during the Lunar New Year event.

The first is the series of Field Research tasks that will reward encounters with Meowth, Alolan Meowth, Galarian Meowth, Medittie and Miltank.

A special Timed Research will feature Tauros that will likely start and end with the Lunar New Year event. Now that the event has begun, here are the field and timed research:

  • Send 3 Gifts to Friends - Meowth
  • Send 10 Gifts to Friends - Alolan Meowth/Galarian Meowth
  • Catch 12 Pokémon - Meditite
  • Catch 6 Water-type Pokémon - Miltank

Timed Research

  • Transfer 12 Pokémon - Poke Ball (x10)
  • Catch 7 Fire-type Pokémon - Charmander
  • Send 1 Gift to Friends - Goldeen

Completion rewards: Miltank, 1000xp, Gyarados Mega Energy (x20)


  • Power Up Pokémon 12 times - Razz Berry (x5)
  • Evolve 3 Fire-type Pokémon - Torchic
  • Send 3 Gifts to friends - Magikarp

Completion rewards: Tauros, 1000xp, Gyarados Mega Energy (x30)


  • Use 12 Berries to catch Pokémon - Poke Ball (x10)
  • Carch 15 Fire-type Pokémon - Tepig
  • Send 5 Gifts to friends - Seaking

Completion rewards: Miltank, 1000xp, Gyarados Mega Energy (x50)


  • Make 12 Great Curveball Throws - Pinap Berry (x3)
  • Catch 20 Fire-type Pokémon - Darumaka
  • Send 7 Gifts to Friends - Meditite

Completion rewards: Miltank, 1500xp, Gyarados Mega Energy (x100)


During the Lunar New Year event, the Raids in Pokémon Go will shift to feature some red-colored Pokémon.

Level one Raids will have Meditite, Carvanha, Duskull, Skorupi, and Darumaka. Level three Raids will have Miltank, Octillery, Blaziken, Camerupt and Absol with Latios and Latias returning in Five-star Raids starting with the beginning of the Lunar New Year event on Tuesday.

Latios and Latias will appear in Legendary Raids until Saturday, February 20 at 9 a.m. local time.

A new Mega Pokémon will make its Pokémon Go debut during this special event. Mega Gyarados will begin appearing alongside Mega Pidgeot and Mega Ampharos in Mega Raids during the same time as Latios and Latias.


Trainers will be able to enjoy the following in-game bonuses during the Lunar New Year:

  • Red Pokémon like Krabby, Goldeen, Magmar, Magikarp, Miltank, Meditite, Tepig will appear more frequently in the wild.
  • Rattata, Ekans, Mankey, Ponyta, Mareep, Houndour, Miltank, Torchic, Bagon, Buneary, Tepig and Litleo will hatch from 5km Eggs during the event.
  • Gifts will contain more Poké Balls.
  • You're more likely to become Lucky Friends with your friends.
  • When you trade a Pokémon, it'll be more likely to become a Lucky Pokémon.
  • Trading range will be temporarily increased to 40 km from Monday, February 8, at 4 p.m. to Monday, February 15, at 4 p.m. EST.
