Why Mega Evolutions Aren't Allowed in the 'Pokémon Go' Battle League Yet

Mega Evolutions are a powerful battle mechanic in the Pokémon franchise, which is why there are restrictions as to when they can arrive in Pokémon Go.

We know that Mega Evolutions can only be used in Raids and Team Go Rocket Battles. They can't be placed in a Gym and you won't be able to battle in the Go Battle League with them. But why can't players use their uber-powerful Pokémon against others around the world?

"We know how important Go Battling is and we didn't want to disrupt the current season and what's going on there. So for now we decided to keep them out," Laura Warner, Senior Game Designer for Pokémon Go, told Newsweek recently.

The current season of the Pokémon Go Battle League is set to end September 14.

"On a balanced-oriented level, we wanted to avoid Mega Evolutions blowing up the competitive scene," Matthew Slemon, Pokémon Go product manager, told Newsweek. "I think there's a couple of parts to it. We didn't want it to feel required to have a Mega Evolution on your team to compete effectively in the Master League, for example, and there won't be that many [Mega Evolutions] to begin with, either."

With only five Mega Evolutions initially available—Mega Charizard X and Y, Blastoise, Venusaur and Beedrill—trainers would see one of those Pokémon in just about every battle.

"Because [Mega Pokémon] are so beefy, they are very powerful and you'll be able to blow through your opponents if they don't have Mega Evolutions," Slemon explained.

So for now, the Pokémon Go team will keep the Go Battle League the way it is. They want players to just enjoy the new Mega Evolution feature and the Mega Raids. This will let trainers get a handle of how Mega Evolution works and won't force players into using Mega Pokémon during the final weeks of the Go Battle League Season 3.

With Season 4 starting at the conclusion of this season, trainers shouldn't expect Mega Evolutions to be added then, either. So when will Mega Pokémon be allowed into the Go Battle League?

Slemon teased that perhaps through events or after more Mega Evolutions are added that the Pokémon Go team will reconsider allowing Mega Pokémon into competitive, but until then, trainers should stay tuned.

In the meantime, trainers can use Mega Pokémon in Raids, and to get a feel of how Mega Pokémon will perform in PVP, use them against Team Go Rocket.
