'Pokémon Go' Contest Lets Trainers Become an NPC for Kanto Tour Event

Ever wish you could be an NPC in a Pokémon game? Well, Niantic and The Pokémon Company are giving Pokémon Go trainers a chance at becoming a fixture in the popular mobile game during the upcoming Kanto Tour event.

Starting today, trainers can enter a special contest to become an NPC for other players to battle against during the Kanto Tour.

During the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event, trainer characters will be shown on the in-game map. Players will be able to walk up to and interact with these characters regardless of whether they've purchased a ticket to the virtual event.

Some special Timed Research that will appear during the event will also task trainers to battle these characters.

So, how do you enter this contest? It's rather simple. According to the official blog, from today to January 12 at 2:59 a.m. EST, trainers can post their entry to the Kanto Tour contest on Twitter. The entry will require your in-game avatar and some creativity.

Pokémon Go trainers will need to include the following in their Kanto Tour entry:

1. A screenshot of your Trainer profile that includes your Trainer name and shows off your avatar's outfit.

2. A list of three Pokémon that would make up your team. These Pokémon must be among those originally discovered in the Kanto region and cannot include Ditto, or any Legendary or Mythical Pokémon.

3. The hashtag #PokemonGOTourContest.

Niantic and The Pokémon Company will be judging entries based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity of avatar outfit
  • General theme
  • Pokémon team composition

Niantic suggests giving yourself and your Pokémon team a theme. Whether you see yourself as an Electric-type Pokémon trainer, a fan of Team Mystic or a Fossil Maniac, the possibilities of avatars and team compositions are seemingly endless.

Get creative and upload your entries as soon as possible.

This contest is open to all Trainers at or above the age of majority in their country, if eligible, at the time of entry. Be sure to read the full contest rules here.

The Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto is scheduled for February 20. During the 12-hour virtual event, all 150 Pokémon from the Kanto region will be available to catch in the wild, during Raids, as rewards for completing research and in Eggs. Their Shiny forms will also be available during this time.

Niantic will be selling two different types of tickets to the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event. Each ticket can be purchased in-app for $11.99 and each comes with its own version-exclusive Pokémon.

Trainers who purchase the Red Version ticket will spot these Pokémon attracted to Incense during the event: Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, Scyther and Electabuzz. With the Green Version ticket, trainers will see these Pokémon attracted to Incense: Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, Magmar and Pinsir.
