'Pokémon Go' Players Can't Access Social Feature Because of Level Limit

The Social/Friend feature in Pokémon Go is finally being rolled out to players around the world, but many aren't able to access it because of an unannounced level limit.

UPDATE: Niantic has allowed the Social feature to be unlocked for Level 30 players as well.

Attention! Friends, gifting, and trading are now live for those level 30 to 40 Trainers! Stay tuned as we will be gradually rolling out these features to other levels soon. pic.twitter.com/iHGsqrUMYM

Pokémon Go players should simply be able to tap the "Friends" tab at the top of their player profile to access the Social feature, but instead, most are met with the following message: "Please come back when you hit Level 40 to access the Social feature!"

This message has left many Pokémon Go players annoyed and confused. Earlier in the week, when Niantic made the Social feature announcement—which includes the ability to trade Pokémon with other players—it made no mention of trainers having to be at that level.

In fact, the official Niantic blog informed players they had to be at least Level 10 to access the Social feature, not 40. Here's the specific excerpt from the blog post.

"You can also build your Friendship Level by trading Pokémon with a friend. If you're near a friend and have a Trainer Level of 10 or higher, you can trade Pokémon you've caught with that friend."

Serebii's Joe Merrick argues that Niantic is putting this Level limit in so the Pokémon Go servers don't crash. He expects the Level limit will decrease over time. Meanwhile, a huge new feature that's been promised since the mobile game was announced won't available to a large number of players.

We have reached out to The Pokémon Company for confirmation and clarification on this level limit and we hope to update soon.
