Everything You Need to Know About Calyrex in 'Pokémon Sword and Shield' Crown Tundra

Calyrex is one of a few new Pokémon introduced in the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and its mysteries are deeper than you may expect.

The new Legendary Pokémon was introduced earlier this year, when the Isle of Armor/Crown Tundra expansion pass was first announced, but aside from some minor details like its typing and ability, not much is known about it.

As you'd expect, one of the stories of the Crown Tundra involves Calyrex and all the secrets surrounding it. There's a massive spoiler to the story, so if you don't want to be spoiled, we suggest you avert your eyes.

The mission that involves Calyrex starts after your Dynamax Adventure tutorial, where you meet some of the main side characters of this region, like Peony.

Once you've completed that, you'll go to Peony's base in Freezington, where you'll find an odd item on his table. He explains to you that he uses it as a pillow, but you notice that it could belong to the statue of a Legendary Pokémon that's outside. You take it and place it on the statue, which brings Calyrex to you.

You'll enter a battle against Calyrex and, after defeating it, the Legendary Pokémon explains how it used to have the power to grow vegetables for the people and bring about a bountiful harvest. But since the villagers have stopped praising it and have essentially forgotten about it, its power has dwindled.

After some quests where you'll have to talk to the villagers about the story of Calyrex, you'll need to find the mayor in the Giant's Bed to get more information about the legend of the Pokémon. This is where you learn that Calyrex had a steed Pokémon and it needs to find it again.

From there, you'll need to purchase carrot seeds from the villager in Freezington for eight Dyire Ore. You can gain this from Dynamax Adventures.

Once you've obtained the carrot seeds, you have to make a choice. You can grow the carrot in the Old Cemetery (Ghost) or the Snowslide Slope (Ice). This will determine the type of the steed Pokémon.

After growing the carrot, you'll need to defeat the steed Pokémon Spectrier/Glastrier. Once you do, you'll then learn about a special item that helped Calyrex tame the steed. After talking with the mayor and obtaining this special item, you'll have to meet Calyrex at the Crown Shine.

This is when Calyrex finally tames the steed and it's time for you to battle and catch it.

In this new form, Calyrex is very powerful. Coming in at Level 80, the typing and ability of this Legendary Pokémon differs depending on which steed you chose.

If you choose Spectrier, Calyrex will become a Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon. In this form, Calyrex gains two abilities, its normal Unburden and the ability of the steed. Spectrier's ability is called Grim Neigh, which increases its Special Attack after defeating a Pokémon.

Glastrier makes Calyrex a Psychic and Ice-type Pokémon with the Unburden and Chilling Neigh, an ability that raises Calyrex's Attack stat once it's knocked out a Pokémon.

The Pokémon's attacks include: Psychic, Agility, Giga Drain and either Astral Barrage—a powerful special Ghost-type attack—or Glastrier's signature attack, which is a powerful, physical Ice-type attack.

Like catching Legendaries in older generations, you'll need to stock up on Poké Balls and be prepared to use status effects and chip its health away if you want to catch it. You can also use the Master Ball that Peony gives you early on in your Crown Tundra journey.

Once you've captured Calyrex, you can keep it in its full form, or defuse it to have Calyrex and the steed as separate Pokémon. Go into your bag and select the Reigns of Unity. Use it on your Calyrex to separate the two. Note, you'll need to have room in your party to do this.

The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield is available now for Nintendo Switch.
