'Pokémon Sword and Shield' Crown Tundra Dynamax Adventure: What You Need to Know

Dynamax Adventures is a brand new battle feature that debuted with the Pokémon Sword and Shield Crown Tundra DLC.

Unlike the Max Raid Battles that trainers are familiar with from the base and Isle of Armor expansions--and yes, those battles are still present in The Crown Tundra--Dynamax Adventures gives a more challenging and cooperative experience to catching Pokémon.

Trainers will be tasked with combing through the Dynamax Adventure caves, battling up to four Pokémon, with the final battle being either a super rare Pokémon or a Legendary Pokémon.

Trainers can take on Dynamax Adventures solo or with others by connecting online. As you can imagine, taking on the continuous battles with AI teammates will be challenging, so we recommend trying to connect with others via the internet.

Once a team of four is complete, you'll each have to choose one of four rental Pokémon. Don't think you can bring you Level 100 Zacian into battle here, you'll be forced to go into battle with not full evolved Pokémon and other 'mon with interesting movesets.

After the four Pokémon are selected, the team will need to choose which path to take. You'll first have to choose between two battles, with the Pokémon's type being the only indicator of what it is. If you're going solo with AI, you make the choice but if there are any other actual players with you it'll be up to a vote with the most votes being the deciding factor.

Once the first battle is finished, you'll move on to the next fork in the road with even more options. Repeat this process until you make it to the end. You can use the right analog to look at the path up ahead to try and map your way beforehand.

To make Dynamax Adventures challenging, your Pokémon is not healed after each battle. The HP and PP used in battle will carry over. This forces trainers to think about which moves to use when.

However, after catching a Pokémon, you and your team have the ability to swap out your rental for the newly caught Pokémon, but only one of you can do it. The order on who chooses first is unclear--we'll update this section once we've figured out a pattern, if there is one--but you can decline or accept when it's your turn to choose.

We recommend swapping out a Pokémon if yours is currently running low on health and doesn't have way to recover HP.

Along the adventure you may find items or a person along a path you've chosen, which you're able to see on the map. Some of the items you come across can heal your Pokémon, others will be hold items that you can immediately equip. People you find along the way may have another rental Pokémon for you to swap out if you choose. It's beneficial to try and choose at least one of the paths that have these mini cutscenes to help your team.

Once you've reached the final battle, you will encounter either a super rare Pokémon or a Legendary Pokémon. If it's a Legendary Pokémon, you can defeat and catch it, but it won't be easy.

Unlike the other battles, this final Pokémon will reset status effects and stat changes on the field so keep that in mind. If you defeat the Legendary, you will have a 100 percent chance to catch it.

If you fail to defeat the Pokémon, you will be taken out of the cave. You can, however, go back to the path that meets with that Legendary you failed to defeat. Peonia will also sell you a path to a Legendary Pokémon for five Dynite Ore.

After your Dynamax Adventure is complete, you'll earn Dynite Ore for your efforts. The amount you earn depends on a few factors, such as completing a certain number of battles, finishing the adventure, catching a special Pokémon and connecting with others via the internet. The most we earned was 11 for catching a Legendary with people online.

This currency is good for goods and services in The Crown Tundra. You'll need to have at least eight for a portion of the main story, but you can also buy rare and powerful items from one of the NPCs in the Dynamax Adventure area.

You can buy training items like Calcium and Zinc, special Poke Balls like Beast Balls and even Bottle Caps and Ability Capsules. The brand new item, the Ability Patch, can also be obtained here.
