'Pokémon Sword & Shield' Crown Tundra Preview Details Dynamax Adventures, Legendaries & More

With The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield just days away from release, previews have begun circulating detailing how some of the new features work including the Dynamax Adventures, Galarian Star Tournament and what to expect from the new Legendary Pokémon.

VG247 posted an all-encompassing preview on Wednesday detailing what they saw and experienced in a guided tour and presentation from The Pokémon Company.

The outlet was quick to point out how vast The Crown Tundra area actually is, taking what The Pokémon Company and GameFreak did with The Isle of Armor DLC earlier in the year and taking it up a new level.

Crown Tundra will have more than just snowy areas, with VG247 stating that there are lush green areas and open waters to explore. There were some other parts of the presentation fans may want to know about.

Take on Legendary Pokemon like Giratina in the Crown Tundra DLC The Pokemon Company

The main story of The Crown Tundra DLC involves Calyrex, a royal Pokémon that was revealed earlier this year. The Legendary Pokémon will appear to the player in the main story and displays some "unique" abilities.

The outlet then talks about the Galarian forms of the Legendary Birds, Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno.

All three Legendary Pokémon are introduced via a cutscene, one that we've seen in trailers already, and from there they scatter across the Crown Tundra. The trainer can catch these three Pokémon, but they'll need to track them down almost like the Legendary Beasts, Entei, Suicune and Raikou in Gen 2.

However, the method to tracking them down is different for all three.

Information on the Dynamax Adventures started coming out over the weekend, but previews have given a bit more detail on what to expect and what the rewards for making it through are.

Like we learned before, trainers will have to travel with three other trainers (AI or real) and take on a series of Dynamax Battles. You won't be able to use your own Pokémon, but one that you can rent for your journey. You can only have one Pokémon through your adventure, but you can swap it out with a Pokémon you catch along the way. However, only one trainer on the team can do this which either the group can decide or the system can randomly select.

Your HP and PP usage is carried over after each battle making it very difficult to make it to the other side. However, there is a chance you can meet someone along the way that can heal or buff you and your team.

At the end, you'll either go against a super rare Pokémon or a Legendary Pokémon. We learned before that these Legendary Pokémon have a 100 percent catch rate. Each player can only get each legendary Pokemon once, which is similar to how other base Pokémon games work.

When the Dynamax Adventure is over, trainers can take home the Pokémon they swapped out. They can also receive special items like the new Ability Patch, which swaps a Pokémon's Ability from its normal to its Hidden Ability.

Legendary Pokémon will also be version exclusive, but which Pokémon appear in which game is still unknown.

The post-game content of The Crown Tundra DLC is the Galarian Star Tournament. This special double tournament with one of the characters from the main story or Isle of Armor.

Players will be able to choose their partner as they make their way through the tournament. Trainers will have to complete the main story and Isle of Armor story before gaining access to this post-game content.

This feature was also referred to as the "hardest challenge" in the game by a Pokémon Company representative to VG247.

Pokémon Sword and Shield is available now for Nintendo Switch. The Crown Tundra DLC is available starting Thursday, October 22.
