Set of Mint Condition Pokémon Cards Sell for More Than $100,000

If you have your old Pokémon cards in your closet somewhere, you may want to dig them out.

A fan of the collectible Pokémon Trading Card Game reportedly paid more than $100 thousand for a little more than 100 cards. According to TMZ Sports, the set of 103 cards was purchased over the weekend for $107,010 at Goldin Auctions. It's the most money that anyone has paid for Pokémon trading cards.

Twelve bidders put in for the 103-card set, which includes the highly sought after holographic Charizard, with the minimum bid being $25,000.

However, what makes this set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game rare is the condition it is in. Every card in the set are in perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. The original set of the Pokémon TCG were released in 1999, so to still be in perfect condition after 20 years is impressive.

Dave Amerman, Goldin Auctions' consignment director, told Kotaku the key to the price was the Gem Mint condition, a metric that assesses the cards' corners, color consistency and gloss. He told the outlet that gathering the cards from the set together will only net $1,000, maybe. However, this particular set was of the highest quality. TMZ reports that less than 50 of these cards in the world are in this pristine condition.

"On the back they have the dark color, the blue Pokémon border. You can't tell if you're not looking closely, but on the back, there's a white chipping sometimes," Amerman said. "To get the perfect grade, it has to be a solid color on front and back."

Amerman said that, since 2016, Pokémon card sets similar to this one have increased almost 10 times in value. So if you're lucky enough to have a full set, and they are in good condition, you may be sitting on a gold mine.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game began in Japan back in 1996 before making its way stateside in late 1998. For 20 years, the Pokémon TCG has become a key part of the franchise's marketing. Not only does The Pokémon Company create and distribute new sets of cards every few months, they are also included in promotional material. In the past, Pokémon trading cards have been a part of fast food kids meals and distributed at theaters when a new Pokémon movie debuts.

There's a highly-competitive scene in the Pokémon TCG community as competitors from around the world compete at tournaments and online using the free Pokémon TCG app.

Each year, The Pokémon World Championships hold tournaments for not just the main series video games but for the TCG. This year, The Pokémon World Championships will take place the weekend of August 16 from Washington D.C. where a new Pokémon TCG champion will be crowned.
