Donald Trump's lawyer has stated there was nothing illegal in Donald Jr.'s meeting with a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer back in June 2016.

Speaking with NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team, told host Chuck Todd: "I do not know everyone for sure that was at that meeting… I can tell you who was not there, the president wasn't aware of the meeting and did not attend it… but there was nothing illegal to cover up."

"With regard to how the information came out, as I said that was information that was controlled not by my client, not by the president, it was controlled by Donald Trump Jr. and they made a decision on how to release that out," he added.

Trump's lawyer also suggested people should be focusing on leaks from former FBI chief James Comey, which he said were to blame for the Russia investigation and claimed were far more important than the meeting between Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya.

"James Comey had a meeting with the president of the United States where he took information about this private meeting with the president, put it on his government computer, went to his government office and decides after he gets fired to leak a conversation he had with the president of the united states to a friend of his who leaked it to a reporter for what purpose?" Sekulow said.

"For the sole purpose of obtaining a special counsel, which was appointed a few days later, so the basis upon which this entire special counsel investigation is taking place is based on what? Illegally leaked information that was a conversation of the president of the United States with the then FBI director," he added.

Told by the host "I didn't ask you about James Comey" and pressed on the Trump Jr. meeting again, Sekulow responded: "That's the basis upon which all that started."

And in an interview with CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday morning, Sekulow once again stressed Trump had been unaware of Trump Jr.'s June 2016 meeting taking place.

"Obviously the president has been very clear on that. He said he has had no meetings, was aware of no meetings with Russians, was not aware of this one until really right before it all broke. And that's what the president said. And in fact there's been no information to the contrary," Sekulow told Face the Nation moderator John Dickerson.

"I'm sure they had conversations during the course of a campaign about meetings that were relevant to some kind of determination. But this one was not," he added.
