The footage was captured during William and Kate's last official tour of the United States where they undertook visits to New York and Washington in 2014. The three-day trip took place in December while the duchess was expecting her second child, Princess Charlotte, with the couple leaving 16-month-old Prince George at home in Britain with family.

During their stay in New York, from which they were based out of a suite at the Carlyle Hotel, the couple visited the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where they watched a Brooklyn Nets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game celebrating a community partnership between the duke and duchess' Royal Foundation and the NBA.

At the beginning of the game, shown in the viral TikTok video, live footage of William and Kate was screened on the arena Jumbotron over the announcement that: "The NBA and the Brooklyn Nets would like to welcome Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Barclays Center for their first NBA Game."

On seeing herself on the big screen, Kate looked somewhat shyly at William who gave a smiling wave as the crowds cheered their arrival. Commenters on the TikTok video have called their reactions "adorable."

"Catherine was like 'who, oh it's us,'" wrote one user.

"They look adorable [smiling face with heart-eyes emoji] I love them!" posted another.

During the game, the Cambridges were seated with NBA and Brooklyn Nets officials but at halftime the couple were seen meeting global superstars as Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who were also sitting courtside, were introduced to the future king and queen.

Playing for the Cavaliers that night was LeBron James, widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The royals met James after the game where the sports star was accused of "breaking protocol" by putting his arm around Kate during a photo opportunity, something that was widely reported on at the time.

The media interest in this incident was so great that Buckingham Palace publicly exonerated James.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge very much enjoyed their time in the U.S., including attending the NBA game and meeting LeBron," Laura King, a Buckingham Palace communications officer, told the Northeast Ohio Media Group, per cleveland.com.

"When members of the Royal Family meet people they want them to feel as comfortable as possible. There is no such thing as Royal protocol," she continued.

Apart from the LeBron James incident, a bigger issue was raised as thousands protested outside the Barclays Center on the evening of the royal visit, following the death of Eric Garner who was killed after being held in a prohibited chokehold during an arrest by NYPD officers in July.

Video footage of the arrest showed Garner telling the arresting officers that he could not breathe. His death resulted in protests around the country.

During the warmup session for the game, LeBron James wore a black T-shirt with white lettering which read: "I can't breathe."

The 2014 visit was the last time that William and Kate have officially traveled to the United States, with William confirmed to be making a return to New York on September 21 to attend the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit.

The summit will take place during New York City's Climate Week and the 77th session of the U.N. General Assembly.

This comes as the 2022 host city for the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony was announced as Boston earlier this year.

The ceremony will take place in early December with William and Kate expected to be in attendance, though this has not yet been confirmed by Kensington Palace.
