'Queen of the South' Canceled: When and Why the Show is Ending

Queen of the South's reign is nearly over, as the USA Network announces that the upcoming fifth season of the telenovela adaptation will be its last. Alongside this news, however, came a new trailer for the final season, as well as a release date reveal for when fans can expect QotS Season 5.

When is Queen of the South ending?

The final Season 5 of the show is set to begin on Wednesday, April 7, when the first of the last 10 episodes air on USA Network.

If the network airs these 10 episodes weekly, then viewers can expect the series finale of Queen of the South on Wednesday, June 9, 2021.

For viewers waiting for it to come to Netflix in full, they have a few additional months to wait. Season 1 came to Netflix eight months after finishing airing on USA, Season 2 nine months, Season 3 eight months, and Season 4, 10 months.

As such, viewers may expect Queen of the South Season 5 to come to Netflix anytime between February and April 2022.

Why is Queen of the South ending?

Though Season 4 did see a noticeable drop of about 20 percent in its ratings for Season 4 (per Nielsen Media Research), the show still had fairly respectable ratings for its network. In fact, the show is the most-watched of the three original dramas that the network still has, which an average 150,000 more viewers per episode than Dirty John and over 250,000 more than The Sinner (per TV Series Finale).

However, the fact that USA Network, once the home of shows like Psych, White Collar and Suits, only has three original dramas left explains why Queen of the South is ending. Over the last few years, the network has been moving away from scripted drama, with The Sinner currently the only one of the three confirmed for another seasonQueen of the South is canceled, while Dirty John has not yet been renewed for Season 3. The network will also share the upcoming Child's Play TV reboot Chucky with SyFy.

As such, the show seems to have been a victim in a change of purpose for the USA Network rather than its own success. Among other shows that have been canceled by the network in recent years are Dare Me, The Purge, Mr. Robot, Suits and its spin-off Pearson, plus Briarpatch starring Rosario Dawson.
