America’s Greatest Workplaces for Mental Wellbeing 2024

Mental well-being is an increasingly important concern for U.S. workers—which means it's increasingly important for U.S. employers as well. Initiatives promoting mental health are being integrated more and more into workplace policies, with strategies like expanded access to counseling and stress-reduction workshops, as flexible arrangements are becoming more commonplace to support work-life balance.

According to a survey of 2,515 employed adults released last year by the American Psychological Association, 92 percent of respondents said it is either very or somewhat important for a company to value their emotional and psychological well-being. But more than half of workers surveyed —55 percent—felt their employer thinks their workplace is "a lot mentally healthier" than it really is.

To spotlight the organizations prioritizing the mental well-being of their employees, Newsweek has partnered with data researcher Plant-A for the inaugural ranking of America's Greatest Workplaces for Mental Well-Being, which lists the top 750 U.S. employers making a positive difference in the mental wellness of their workers.

The ranking is based on an assessment of public data, feedback from HR executives at companies with more than 1,000 employees and an anonymized panel of HR professionals to identify employee-satisfaction drivers, and large-scale confidential online surveys of more than 250,000 employees working for U.S. companies. The latter provided more than 1.5 million company reviews collected in 2022 and 2023. A subsequent research phase conducted with business data specialist PrivCo examined seven KPIs related to mental well-being, including a range of corporate mental health programs and social media ratings of work-life balance.

Well-known companies like Fresh Direct, Liberty Mutual and Home Depot are featured on the list, which awards companies with four, four and a half, or five stars.

Across a variety of industries, the companies included here are setting a new standard when it comes to supporting their workers' mental wellness.

METHODOLOGY

Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group are partnering for the first year to determine America's Greatest Workplaces for Mental Wellbeing 2024, recognizing the greatest workplaces in the United States by their performance on a range of relevant metrics from the perspective of U.S. employees.

The methodology for America's Greatest Workplaces for Mental Wellbeing 2024 is based on a five-stage evaluation.

The first phase was a pre-study survey that interviewed HR professionals to identify current and future employee satisfaction drivers.

The second phase was the main employee survey among U.S. employees who reviewed employers they were familiar with. The independent study is based on more than 250,000 employees who provided over 1**.5 million company reviews** collected in 2022 and 2023.

The third phase was an elaborate desk research project in which we collected 7 KPIs relevant for mental wellbeing in the workplace (e.g. corporate mental well-being programs, reviews and information from social media platforms).

In the fourth phase, we applied media monitoring, reviewing all published press of the past 24 months (12/9/2021 – 12/10/2023) of all recognized companies to identify potential legal disputes around the workplace.

The fifth step was the validation step. We calculated an individual company score based on our scoring model. The best companies in the tiers of 5,000+ employees and 1,000 to 4,999 employees have been recognized as "America's Greatest Workplaces for Mental Wellbeing 2024."
