Rapinoe Responds to Trump Criticism: 'You're Rooting for People to Do Bad?'

U.S. Women's Soccer star Megan Rapinoe responded to former President Donald Trump's criticism on Friday, saying of Trump, "'You're rooting for people to do bad?' Yikes."

Trump bashed the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) for being too "woke" to win gold after the soccer team lost to Canada in the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has," Trump said in a statement.

He targeted Rapinoe specifically, saying at the end, "The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job."

Despite scoring two of the four goals that gave USWNT the win over Australia and secured the team to take the bronze medal, Trump claimed that "If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze."

"It's a real sad dig into an old bag," Rapinoe told reporter Jack Doles. "I'm just like, 'You're rooting for people to do bad?' Yikes."

The feud between Rapinoe and Trump began in 2019 when the then-President stated he was inviting the U.S. women's national soccer team to the White House following the Women's World Cup, but Rapinoe said in a video shared on Twitter, "I'm not going to the f**king White House."

Trump had responded in a series of tweets, "I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women's Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!"

In the same interview, Rapinoe discussed the Olympics game and the team's bronze medal, saying, "We didn't have the tournament we wanted to. The performance we had in the last game, that's who we want to be and that's who we are."

Rapinoe became one of the more prominent athletes outside of the NFL to speak out against police brutality and injustice across the country.

In referencing her "wokeness," Rapinoe stated she considers her platform to be a huge gift. "I think it's important for everybody to do whatever they can to make the world a better place," she said. "We obviously have huge platforms. We get to be at the Olympics."

She said it would be a waste not to use the opportunity to improve society.

Newsweek reached out to USWNT for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
