Rick Astley Just RickRolled All of TikTok, Now Known as 'RickTok'

If you need a break from Election Day stress, or some amusement while standing in line to vote, please know that '80s musician Rick Astley has shared a TikTok of himself dancing to his hit song "Never Gonna Give You Up." That's right, the man himself is effectively RickRolling the whole app.

Astley posted the video on his TikTok on Tuesday morning, doing the dance from the iconic music video for his 1987 debut single while the song's chorus plays. He also dubbed his corner of the popular video streaming app "RickTok."

"Still not giving you up. Welcome to RickTok," he wrote in the video description, while also using the following hashtags: "#BackToTheMusic #GetYourCoat #RickTok."

As of 12:07 p.m. EST, the video has been viewed 2.9 million times on TikTok and liked over 668,000 times.

The RickRolling meme has existed since 2007, and it famously involves people sending links to the music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up," pretending that they're links to something else.

TikTokkers on the app left comments, joking and rejoicing in the fact that the English musician managed to meme everyone on the app. Astley replied to one user to confirm that she did indeed get RickRolled. "Did he just-oh my god," she wrote. To which he replied, "Yeah, he did."

"POV: you just got rickrolled by Rick astley [sic]," one of the top comments on the video says.

TikTok star and musician Mr. Bruno celebrated the video. "Oh, my god. I've made it. I've made it to RickTok," he wrote.

While this seems to be the first time that Astley has RickRolled people on TikTok, it's not his first video on the app. His only other video was made back in April. That clip features the singer dancing in a purple suit and rain boots as he power washes two garbage bins to Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now."

This also isn't the first time that Astley has RickRolled his audience. In 2008, he performed the song on a float during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, effectively RickRolling all the attendees at the parade and those watching on TV at home.

In 2017, Astley appeared at two Foo Fighters shows to perform a slightly more distorted rendition of "Never Gonna Give You Up" with Dave Grohl and company. As previously reported, Astley has shown his affinity for the blockbuster rock band during quarantine. In April, he released an acoustic cover of the band's signature song, "Everlong."

Despite the prank being over 10 years old, sometimes people still manage to get the singer with the meme. In April, a Reddit user posted what they claimed was a link to a photo of themselves meeting the singer backstage at a show, only for it to be a link to the music video. Astley replied to the user simply with the clapping hands emoji.

Astley's label did not respond to Newsweek's emailed request for comment in time for publication.
