'Rick and Morty' 50th Episode Preview: 'Trying Something New' for Season 5 Finale

Season 5 of Rick and Morty is coming to an end on Adult Swim in a way you've never seen before.

Fans faced an unexpected delay to see the season finale after it was announced there would be an almost month-long wait after Episode 8 "Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort" on August 8.

Now the creators, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, are preparing to present two separate episodes as one adventure.

Here's everything we know about the Season 5 finale airing tonight on Adult Swim.

Rick and Morty Season 5 finale

Many thought that Episodes 9 and 10 of Rick and Morty would play out weekly on Adult Swim, but instead it was announced there'd be an unexpected delay followed by both episodes playing back to back on Sunday, September 5 on Adult Swim.

The episodes, "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall" and "Rickmurai Jack" could be combined into one hour-long episode, making it the show's 50th episode overall.

Anticipating the show's release, Adult Swim said in a press statement, "Rick and Morty are tryin something new broh. Doin it big."

The creators of the show have shared small trailer footage of the upcoming finale showing Rick replacing Morty with two crows after Morty used his portal gun without permission and tried to hide the evidence.

The first trailer released questions "Who is Rick without Morty?" as we get a glimpse of Rick with the two crows that will replace Morty.

The Rick and Morty social media accounts shared a preview of how Rick's dynamic might work with his two new assistants, as he drops into frame looking like a witch. The caption alongside the moving image reads "It'll all make sense Sunday."

Looking Back on Season 5 of Rick and Morty

The eight episodes of Season 5 of Rick and Morty have seen the family battle their own clones, head to BDSM hell, battle a "horny ocean man", and accidentally create then train a giant incest baby.

Safe to say it's been a tiring season for Rick, Morty (both Roiland), Summer (Spencer Grammer), Beth (Sarah Chalke) and Jerry (Chris Parnell).

Dan Harmon has voiced plenty of characters across the season too, like Mr. Nimbus and Birdperson.

The guest stars across Season 5 have included Alison Brie, Steve Buscemi, Jim Gaffigan, Jennifer Coolidge, Timothy Olyphant and Darren Criss.

The Future of Rick and Morty

We already know that there will be a Season 6 of Rick and Morty as Adult Swim ordered 70 more episodes in 2018, taking the show to 100 in total. Harmon also confirmed last year that writers were already working on scripts for Season 6.

After the multi-episode deal with Adult Swim was signed, co-creator Roiland told Polygon that he hopes the security means there won't be any big gaps between seasons. This could imply that Season 6 will arrive before the summer of 2022.

The Season 5 finale of Rick and Morty will be on Adult Swim on Sunday, September 5 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.
