'Rick and Morty' Season 6 Episode 5 Recap: A Jerry and Rick Adventure

The fifth episode of the sixth season of Rick and Morty investigated the mysterious underworld of fortune cookies which had dire consequences for Jerry Smith—and his mother.

Some of Rick and Morty's best episodes have featured a Jerry and Rick team-up, ("The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy") and "Final DeSmithation" can now be added to that list.

Ahead of the new season, co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland told Newsweek that Season 6 would be better than Season 5, based on all of the behind-the-scenes problems that the last season faced. Harmon said there's now a "stability" to the work process in making the latest episodes of Rick and Morty, which means "we're moving forwards again."

While the rest of the Smith family (Space Beth included) spend the day at the zoo off screen, Rick helps Jerry avoid a horrific fate by fighting hordes of armed guards, a giant space monster, and a Gwyneth Paltrow-type businesswoman.

The episode that eventually turns into a fun spin on the Final Destination franchise begins with Summer, Morty, Beth, Jerry and Rick are all enjoying a meal at Panda Express.

Finishing off the meal, each member (except skeptical Rick) eats a harmless fortune cookie. Three of them get bland and "lame" fortunes on the paper inside but Jerry receives one that causes everyone in the building to listen in.

"You will have sex with your mother."

Obviously mortified by the suggestion, Jerry starts to lose grip as he takes it seriously. Beth finds the whole ordeal hilarious while Morty and Summer mercilessly mock and tease Jerry. He starts dodging his mother's calls, hiding in closets, and even tries dressing like his son because he's allowed to have sex with Morty's mom ("I'm not unpacking that.").

While everyone goes to the zoo, Rick stays behind to help Jerry because he doesn't like seeing anyone be bullied. This is the first hint of the episode that their often fraught relationship may be fixed yet. As it turns out, Rick discovers that Jerry's fortune cookie isn't as meaningless as it seems.

Assuming it's all about him, Rick heads back to Panda Express with Jerry where they are instantly shot at by the backroom staff. An epic fight scene is played out to the Taxi TV show theme tune (thanks to Summer's TikTok craze). As it turns out the shooters are running a "harmless" meth ring which has nothing to do with the cookies.

Jerry and Rick drive a Panda Express truck to their headquarters where they infiltrate and investigate what the source of the powerful fortune cookies are. On their way they encounter Jennif Padrow Chunt. She's giving a talk to "Bezos, Bill Gates, prime ministers and weirdly Billy Zane."

Every suit Jennif wears is virgin white. She sleeps on a bed of soft grain, and she begins every morning by dragging her "perfect vagina" across Chinese silvergrass. In her own words, this Gwyneth Paltrow parody character is "firm and ripe." Jerry and Rick move on but it's not the last we've seen of Jennif.

Within this mysterious place they witness businesspeople receiving fortune cookies with positive fortunes, while others being punished receive threats. Rick vows to take this power for himself. As they fight their way through, Rick discovers Jerry is immortal for this time as he has an "unresolved fortune" meaning he can't die until he has sex with his mom.

Eventually they find the source of the fortune cookies. They're actually made out of an alien species' poop that has the power to "bend entropy into definable outcomes," essentially controlling fate.

An old man is trapped there, actually called Old Man Huxby, who has been putting crazy messages, like the one Jerry received, into these fortune cookies for 20 years. One of the cookies actually said come and help him or "a virus is gonna shut down the world" alluding to a real world event.

Before Rick and Jerry can help the Old Man and the alien escape, Jennif walks in with dozens of armed guards and Jerry's mother whom they picked up from the airport.

An incredibly unique fight ensues between Rick and the guards who, upon eating fortune cookies, each have unique abilities, powers and hindrances. Rick's task is to manipulate their various powers against them, and he also begins to fire new randomized cookies into his enemies' mouths, turning them into birds, babies and cars.

When Rick comes face to face with Jennif, she can't die because her fortune is to become the most successful businesswoman in the world. It takes Rick no time to access his phone and make that happen for her, quickly making her vulnerable again.

After the fight, a wormhole opens up in the building, sucking everything inside, including Jerry and his mom. Through various minute events which included ripping off Jerry's pants and his mom's dress, as they're flying through the air, Jerry and his mom look set to collide in a way mother and son should not. In slow motion, Rick writes a fortune cookie "Jerry No Sex Mom" and swings around to fire it into his mouth, seemingly avoiding disaster and saving him from mental scars.

Back at home, Jerry hands Rick "the last" fortune cookie to thank him, with the message reading "You'll make a new friend." Jerry tells Rick they are now friends, to which Rick lambasts his son-in-law telling him he would have been invulnerable forever if he hadn't said that. While Jerry trudges off downbeat, Rick pockets the sweet fortune rather than throwing it away, implying that they may be firm friends now after all.

Morty, Beth, Summer and Space Beth's day at the zoo wasn't all it's cracked up to be either as the post-credits scene shows them coming to the realization that they're at a human zoo.

The voice of Jerry, former SNL actor Parnell, told Newsweek he'd be up for voicing characters on Rick and Morty for years to come yet: "Assuming the writing can stay at the level that it has been and continues to be, we should carry on."

Commenting on Adult Swim's 70-episode renewal of Rick and Morty in 2018, Parnell believes it's given Harmon, Roiland and Scott Marder the ability to improve the quality of the show even more.

"Everybody on the amazing writing team was like, 'okay, we got this gig and this is going to keep going. We can plan further ahead. We could just keep breaking stories,' and I think it's really helped in so many ways."

Episode 6 of Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim on Sunday October 9.
