'Sea of Thieves' Treasure Chests: How to Complete Gold Hoarder Voyages
Sea of Thieves has three main mission types, and one of them involves the classic pirate pastime of following treasure maps and digging for buried chests. These are my personal favorite voyages to complete, and here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
'Sea of Thieves' Treasure Chests: How to Complete Gold Hoarder Voyages

Step 1: Start a Voyage
First, you'll need a voyage to go on. To start a voyage, be sure to follow our Voyage Guide. For Gold Hoarder missions, you'll want to find a tent on the beach of any given outpost. These always indicate the Gold Hoarders. Once at the tent, talk to the person behind the counter to get your voyages to vote on.
Step 2: Start a Gold Hoarders Voyage

After returning to your ship, vote on a Gold Hoarders voyage to begin. Once you start, you'll be given at least one treasure map. Using the world map in the captain's quarters, then find the island out at sea shaped like the island on your treasure map. If you're completing an early mission, the island will likely be close to the outpost you got the voyage from.
Once you find the right island, mark it on your map and set sail.
Step 3: Get that Booty
Once you've arrived at the island, look at the treasure map again. You'll notice at least one red X on the map. Use clues like rocks and trees from the map to locate where the X should be on the island. Be on your guard for any dangers like skeletons that may pop up and attack while on land.
Pro Tip: start by getting to the right side of the island. All treasure maps are oriented with the north on top. From here, you'll be able to spot context clues easier.

Once you've reached where the X should be, bring out your shovel by holding RB to open your tools selection. Select the shovel, then press RT to start digging. If you hear a "thud" sound on your first dig, you've found the chest. If not, pull out the map to make sure you're in the right location.
Once you find the chest, keep digging at it a few more times until you can carry it. Once in your hands, bring it to your ship.

Pro Tip: How And When To Drop A Chest - some chests can impair those who carry it. For example, one chest I've found made the carrier instantly and permanently drunk until the chest was dropped. To drop a chest, press B. Watch out for anything sneaky!
Step 4: Get paid

Once you have the chest(s) on board, sail back to any outpost. Find the Gold Hoarder tent on the beach, and bring the chest(s) to the man inside. Trade them in for a fancy reward. Completing Gold Hoarder voyages will unlock more, harder missions in the future. Below is a list of chests and gold awarded for each.
Sea Of Thieves Chest & Gold Rewards List
- Castaway's Chest (Common) - 100 gold
- Seafarer's Chest - 200 gold
- Marauder's Chest - 400 gold
- Captain's Chest - 1000 gold
- Chest of a Thousand Grogs - 1200 gold (Causes a drunken effect to the player carrying it.)

Why didn't I get gold for my chests?
Hey, pirates! We're aware some players are experiencing issues with gold and reputation upon logging in or turning in items. We're currently investigating and working on a fix! The gold and reputation rewards should merely be delayed. More information: https://t.co/obgvC7AgSN

Did you not get paid for that last Gold Hoarder voyage you completed? Rare is aware of the situation and is working on a fix. The good news is you probably did get paid, but your rewards haven't been given to you yet. Keep waiting and they should show up in your account.
