'Smash Ultimate' Director Agrees There Are Too Many 'Fire Emblem' Characters

The latest DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Byleth, the main protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. And if you're one of the legions of fans who feels there are too many Fire Emblem characters in Smash, series director, Masahiro Sakurai agrees.

In his weekly Famitsu column, Sakurai restated how characters are chosen and his thoughts on the number of Fire Emblem and sword characters.

"I don't choose the fighters based on my own preference," Sakurai wrote - via Siliconera. "That's for Nintendo to bring in."

Sakurai explained the process of introducing Byleth into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He discussed the topic when the character was first revealed. Sakurai says, "this time around, we brought the experience of immediately playing as the protagonist of a game that people currently play. At the starting point of its production, we experimented by working with a title that was in development."

Usually, DLC characters in Smash Ultimate come from old franchises or games that have been out for over a year. Fire Emblem: Three Houses was released in July and has been on the market for just a few months. Sakurai revealed in his special Byleth demo that he got to play Three Houses before it was finished to get a feel for the characters.

On the subject of the amount of Fire Emblem spots on the roster, Sakurai says "There are too many Fire Emblem characters. And there are too many sword characters. I, too, understand. However, these things are already decided, so we move forward. The things I should be thinking about are elsewhere."

Sakurai reiterates how Nintendo decides which characters are chosen for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and he and his studio conduct the development process. But even that doesn't mean the team has complete say in how characters play in Smash Ultimate.

"Since there are too many sword characters, we make them all have their own tactics that are unique to the fighter," Sakurai wrote.

This is especially true of Byleth, who uses four different weapons to fight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. To differentiate the character from Roy, Marth and Robin, Byleth can use a bow, axe, lance and sword.

Sakurai revealed that there will be a second Fighters Pass for Smash Ultimate with six new DLC characters. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't choose another Fire Emblem or sword fighter for DLC, although we predict fans would not mind if Dante from Devil May Cry made an appearance.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
