'SoulCalibur VI' Producer Confirms Character Creation, Talks Geralt's Story and DLC Plans

As the release date for SoulCalibur VI gets closer, more information about the Bandai Namco fighting game will slowly be revealed.

Certain game modes and features, like Create-a-Soul, which allows players to create and fight with their own custom fighter, and bringing in guest characters have become staples of the franchise. However, the Create-a-Soul mode hasn't been confirmed for the latest iteration of the fighting game until now.

Newsweek sat down with Producer Motohiro Okubo to talk all things SoulCalibur VI and what fans can expect, including what game modes will be present and how Geralt will play into the story mode.

Editor's Note: The following has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

Guest characters have become synonymous with the franchise. Is that something you always tried to keep in mind when developing SC6?

There's been a lot of expectation when it comes to guest characters in the SoulCalibur series. And we always try to meet and exceed those expectations. Even making Geralt playable in the SoulCalibur universe, we went through a lot to make sure he felt like the same Geralt you play in The Witcher .

Was it difficult to make his character make sense in the universe and have him involved in the conflict?

Geralt is going to play a key role, actually, in how the story between SoulCalibur and Soul Edge unfolds. And you look at a character like Geralt, and it was one of the reasons why we identified him, is that his world setting is very close to the one we established in the SoulCalibur franchise.

Can you shed some light on other game modes in SoulCalibur VI? What about the create a character?

In terms of other modes, there is the alternative story mode that I mentioned before and the character creator that is a key element of SoulCalibur. That's going to be in there, we don't know how it's going to look yet. There will be online modes, of course, but how all of this is going to play out, I'd say stay tuned.

Post-launch plans?

Along with the release date, we announced a season pass. There is going to be some DLC that is in planning, and future updates. We plan to continue these updates as long as these DLCs last. And of course, as developers, there is a desire and want to do more for a game. That's going to depend on the reception from the fans. We want to work on the game more. [Laughs]
