How The 'Spencer' Cast Compares to the Real-Life Royals

Spencer is the upcoming biographical, psychological drama about Princess Diana's struggles as a member of the British Royal Family.

The film, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, follows Princess Diana over three days in 1991: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and December 26, culminating with her making the decision to leave the Royal Family. Diana and Charles announced their separation in 1992 and their divorce in August 1996.

As per tradition, the family have gathered at the Queen's Sandringham Estate, where they follow regimented schedules, practice old customs and spend the days eating, drinking, shooting, and hunting.

At the time, Diana and Prince Charles' marriage had broken down and rumors of affairs and divorce were rife. The film is an imagining of what Diana was going through over those key three days.

Kristen Stewart is the latest famous face to portray the late princess, following on from Emma Corrin in The Crown. Spencer also features a star-studded cast, from Jack Farthing to Sally Hawkins alongside some up-and-coming actors.

Newsweek has taken a closer look at the Spencer cast versus the real-life royals.

Princess Diana — Kristen Stewart

Twilight star Kristen Stewart is almost unrecognizable as Diana, Princess of Wales.

Dawning a blonde hairstyle, a British accent, and getting Diana's mannerisms down to a T, Stewart's portrayal of the late Princess of Wales is captivating—so much so, the majority of reviews have called for her to receive her first Oscar nomination.

Stewart is best known for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga. She then went on to star in Snow White and the Huntsman, Charlie's Angels, and Happiest Season.

Charles — Jack Farthing

Jack Farthing Spencer

Jack Farthing portrays Diana's husband, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne.

Although only appearing in some scenes, Charles' presence is most definitely felt as Diana's story plays out.

Seeking to rediscover her former self, Charles will stop at nothing to protect his reputation from being tarnished by Diana's so-called 'antics.' In Spencer, he even goes so far as to order Diana's curtains to be sewn shut.

Farthing is best known for playing Freddie Threepwood in Blandings and George Warleggan in Poldark. He also featured in the 2014 film Riot Club and most recently, he starred as Marc Fisher in the Netflix comedy, Love Wedding Repeat.

Maggie — Sally Hawkins

Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins portrays Maggie, the royal dresser, in Spencer.

It is unknown if Maggie is based on one particular individual, but as per royal customs, Princess Diana would have had dressers to aid her with her outfits every single day.

Maggie and Diana have a close friendship in the film, with Diana confiding in Maggie daily. In Spencer, when Charles orders Maggie to return to London over Christmas, Diana is left devastated.

Hawkins is well known for her role as Poppy in Happy-Go-Lucky, for which she won several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the Silver Bear for Best Actress.

For her performance as Elisa in The Shape of Water, Hawkins received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Equerry Major Alistair Gregory— Timothy Spall

Timothy Spall portrays equerry major Alistair Gregory in Spencer.

The title of equerry is considered to be one of the most senior positions in a royal household, who is required to accompany the Queen at royal engagements and visits to royal residences.

As equerry, the fictional Alistair Gregory in Spencer is the personal attendant to the Queen, who inadvertently or intentionally (you can be the judge) makes Diana's stay at Sandringham extremely difficult.

For example, he forced Diana, who is struggling with bulimia, to weigh herself and asks her to stay in line and on her best behavior. He is all-seeing and all-hearing, watching Diana's every move.

Spall is well-known around the world for his role as Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter film series.

His other well-known credits include All or Nothing, Mr. Turner, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Chef Darren McGrady — Sean Harris

Sean Harris plays the role of chef Darren McGrady, the head chef at Sandringham.

He has a close friendship with Diana and offers her advice when she needs it most. He is also sympathetic to her personal struggles and does his best to protect her.

Harris' character is based on the real Darren McGrady, who was the personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Princes William and Harry for 15 years.

Harris portrayed Micheletto Corella in The Borgias, William Gascoigne in The King, and Solomon Lane in the Mission Impossible film series.

Anne Boleyn — Amy Manson

Amy Manson portrays Anne Boleyn in Spencer.

History buffs will know Boleyn was the Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 and the second wife of King Henry VIII. Both Henry and Anne faced rumors of adultery (Henry's mistress was Anne's lady-in-waiting, Jane Seymour), but regardless of both parties being guilty, it was Anne who bore the consequences.

Led by Thomas Cromwell in 1536, accusations of adultery and plotting against the King were made against Anne, her brother, and members of her court. She was arrested on May 2, 1536, and taken to the Tower of London. She was then executed on May 19, 1536, and Henry married Jane Seymour just 11 days later.

Throughout Spencer, comparisons are made between Diana's struggle and the fate of Anne Boleyn.

Manson is a Scottish actress, best known for playing Merida in Once Upon a Time and Alice Guppy in Torchwood.

Queen Elizabeth II — Stella Gonet

Stella Gonet portrays Queen Elizabeth II in Spencer.

Like Charles, Queen Elizabeth II does not feature a huge amount in Spencer but her presence and power are felt throughout the film.

Gonet is a Scottish actress best known for her theatre career, appearing in productions of Hamlet and Handbagged.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh — Richard Sammel

Richard Sammel portrays Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Spencer.

Sammel is a German actor best known for his role as Thomas Eichhorst on the FX television series, The Strain.

Other cast members include Jack Nielen as Prince William, Freddie Spry as Prince Harry, Mathias Wolkowski as Prince Edward, Oriana Gordon as Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, Niklas Kohrt as Prince Andrew, and Elizabeth Berrington as Anne, Princess Royal.

Spencer will be released in theaters worldwide on Friday, November 5, 2021.
