Golfer Michael Kim was on cloud nine, and rightfully so, after his impressive and historic performance at the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota.
At the start of Friday's second round, Kim was tied for 43rd on the leaderboard, but his incredible 12-under-par round of 59 saw him skyrocket to the top. With the performance, he became the 15th golfer to achieve a 59-or-lower round on the US PGA Tour.
His round included 12 birdies without a single bogey and a 24-foot birdie putt on his final hole. Kim's excitement at what he'd achieved carried over to his social media, where he fired off a message about the historic accomplishment.

"59 breakdown!! Something I never would have thought I’d do. What a day. Let’s get into it," Kim wrote to kick off a thread on his X to recap his thoughts throughout the various holes.
He passed the record for the TPC Twin Cities course set by Adam Svensson and Kurt Kityama in 2025. In addition, he became the 15th golfer to achieve a 59, and the first since Jake Knapp did it at the Cognizant Classic last year.
It was an epic performance for Kim, who started with back-to-back pars and then proceeded to birdie 12 of his last 16 holes.
Looking at the list of other golfers to have achieved the 59 feat, Kim joins major stars that include Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, and Jim Furyk. Not bad company to be in whatsoever for this club, as many of those players hold quite a resume of PGA Tour wins.
As it stands, Kim remains atop the leaderboard heading into the weekend at 14-under par and leads second-place golfer Ben Kohles by three strokes.
For the 33-year-old Kim, this could be the sort of momentum-building performance he needed to go on a run this year. His only PGA Tour win came in 2018 at the John Deere Classic, and right now he's in a great position to claim the nearly $1.6 million prize money for winning the 3M Open.
That said, there are still two rounds to go, and Scheffler looms on the leaderboard in fifth place, suggesting things could get interesting for Kim in the final two rounds.
"I’m only halfway there. I still need to kind of get focused up," Kim said after his performance on Friday, per Twin Cities Pioneer Press.
