Weiss has served as the Braves bench coach since the 2018 season, helping Atlanta and former manager Brian Snitker win 680 games in that span. Prior to his stint as the bench coach, Weiss was the manager of the Colorado Rockies from 2013-2016, a tenure that may leave fans a bit concerned about the future.
In four seasons with the Rockies, Weiss went 281-363 (43.6%) and never reached more than 75 wins in a season. Two times in that tenure, Colorado reached 90-plus losses, with the most being 96 in the 2014 season. Atlanta is obviously much more talented than any of the Rockies teams that Weiss managed, but it is still a worrisome managerial record for the 61-year-old skipper.
The silver lining, though, is that Weiss has been with the organization's core group since the beginning. He was the right-hand man for Snitker and is familiar with nearly every single player on the Braves roster. His philosophy of the game is likely similar to that of Snitker, so there should not be many adjustments needed from the players.
Atlanta chose the low-risk, high-reward route and while that sometimes may be the smart thing to do, a splash hire for a young and energetic Braves team may have been the smartest thing to do.
