Star third baseman Alex Bregman has signed a five-year, $175 million deal with the Chicago Cubs, departing the Boston Red Sox after one season following his opt-out.
The Cubs will be paying Bregman $35 million per season, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan, who broke the news.

Chicago was set to lose star outfielder Kyle Tucker this offseason amid interest from big-money teams, though the front office has pivoted by adding a premier position player who will likely end up earning less than Tucker.
Bregman had a good season with the Red Sox, hitting .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 appearances for Boston.

According to additional reporting from Passan, the contract includes no opt-outs and a full no-trade clause for the infielder, locking him in with the Cubs unless he approves of a trade destination.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox last winter, though it included opt-outs after the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
He decided to walk away from two years left on a $80 million deal, and his gamble paid off when he landed a longer-term deal that nets him more money.

Bregman is about to turn 32, which is one of the potential factors in a slow-moving free agency.
However, his resume is one of the better ones in baseball, having won two World Series titles, a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and three All-Star team appearances.
The infielder is best known for being a part of the Houston Astros team that was caught sign-stealing during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Bregman has been one of the faces of the scandal, becoming one of the more hated figures in the sport, though his production as a player is undeniable.
His 2025 season was valued at 3.5 fWAR. He has been able to rack up at least 4.2 fWAR between 2022 and 2024.
With a stable glove at the hot corner and a good amount of offensive production, Bregman is one of the more well-rounded players in baseball.
