The Cardinals have long been shopping Arenado as the organization had been seeking to shed payroll. The third baseman was nearly traded last winter to the Houston Astros, but Arenado nixed the deal.
Arenado is a Southern California native and had been previously linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason as there was uncertainty surrounding Max Muncy's future with the organization. Arenado sent fans into a frenzy when he posted a collection of pictures on Instagram along with the song "dodger blue" by Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar.
While Arenado was heavily linked to the World Series champion Dodgers, no trade came to fruition. A year later, the 10-time Gold Glover will make his return to baseball's best division with the Snakes.
Arenado is owed $42 million over the next two years, earning $27 million in 2026 and $15 million in 2027. The Cardinals will pay $31 million of the $42 million owed to Arenado.
As for how Arenado feels joining the D-backs? USA Today's Bob Nightengale revealed the third baseman's reaction to the blockbuster trade.
"Arenado, who has a home in the Los Angeles area, told USA TODAY Sports in a text message that he is thrilled to be joining the D-backs," Nightengale writes. "He fills the vacancy left by Eugenio Suarez, who was traded last summer to the Seattle Mariners."
The Diamondbacks fell short of the playoffs last season, but it's been reported the organization cares about winning. Their latest offseason moves indicates that is indeed the case.
