The Miami Marlins are in the process of a house-cleaning so thorough, it will look like they just moved into loanDepot Park once general manager Peter Bendix is finished.

Manager Skip Schumaker announced in September he will not return in 2025. His entire coaching staff was dismissed, with only two given the opportunity to return in some capacity. Some 70 staff members in total were reportedly let go.

According to one report Thursday, it appears Bendix is intent on diversifying baseball's traditionally white and male managerial pool.

Isaac Azout of Fish on First reported that the Marlins will interview George Lombard, the Detroit Tigers' bench coach, to become Schumaker's replacement. Also "on the radar" is San Francisco Giants coach Alyssa Nakken.

Nakken, already the first full-time female coach in major league history, would become MLB's first female manager if hired.

Gabe Kapler, currently an assistant general manager in Miami, was the Giants' manager in 2020 when he hired Nakken. When Kapler was fired after the 2022 season, she interviewed to become his successor. When veteran manager Bob Melvin was hired to the job instead, Nakken remained on his staff.

A softball standout in college at Sacramento State, Nakken has a master's degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco. She joined the Giants as a baseball operations intern in 2014 and served in various front-office roles before joining Kapler's coaching staff.

Lombard, who is African-American, has a connection to Kapler too. Kapler was under consideration for the Los Angeles Dodgers first-base job in Dec. 2015, a job that ultimately went to Lombard. Kapler instead remained in his post as the Dodgers' director of player development for another two seasons.

Lombard has been the Tigers' bench coach since Nov. 2020. He is also reportedly a candidate for the Chicago White Sox managerial vacancy along with Schumaker.

The Marlins are coming off a 62-100 season in which they conceded a rebuild by trading two of their best players, Luis Arraez and Tanner Scott, in separate deals with the San Diego Padres.

In 2023, Schumaker guided Miami to a surprise Wild Card berth. But general manager Kim Ng left after the season and was replaced with Bendix, an alumnus of the Tampa Bay Rays front office.
